BALING CORNSTALKS

We don't grow any corn around here, so this probably sounds like a dumb question to you guys that do grow corn. What do you do with cornstalks after you bale them?

I baled by corn leftovers last year by first running a bushhog over the field after I picked it, then raking it as I would grass then baling it with my NH664 belt baler, no adjustments and it worked better than it does with grass. Small field made many, many bales, it was spitting them out much faster than grass.

and to answer the question below, those bales are then fed to cows, they love them

My neighbor has about 350 holsteins and bales his cornstalks after combining and uses them for bedding. He's always looking for bedding. says it keeps the cows much healthier. He also cuts and bales marsh grass for the same purpose.

Haven't actually seen it done, but people not too far from here have cut corn with a dick mower and made round bale corn silage out of it before.Suprize's me that it could be done, but apparently it works.

I cannot speak to costs, but a lot of corn stover, what most call it here, was baled the past two previous years cuz of hay shortages from our drought. Cows do love it.

We use it for bedding for the hogs in the hoop barns-works great. Going to be tuff to bale this year, got to be real dry, stalks and the ground.

I would say it would about the same money as grass hay or just a shade higher as they can be hard on equipment. If the custom guy had to cut, rake, and bale here it would be around or just over $20. Bale only $10, bale w/ net wrap $12.

(What I have never understood about hay operators is that you can't get any one to do custom work for less than $20 total. The same folks who charge $20 a bale to do hay have adds in the local paper now selling their own hay for $20-$30 a bale. Never could figure out how they pencil that out.)

Dont have an answer to the cost, but i would say a minumum of $10 if they are running a new baler and tractor. Around here a lot of guys use the new Vermeer baler, it handles them well. We still use the old new holland 851's, but they are slow. This picture is from two years ago when the stalks were dry, last year they were wet and it was slow going and then the snow came. Most guys will run a large v rake down the fied so you mostly just get the leaves and some stalks, cows will eat it this way or you can grind it and mix it with hay or silage. Helps strecth out the feed during winter. We also run an all crop head sometimes on the corn and then we can just bale behind the combine, in the picture we raked eight rows together.

I charge $12/bale for raking & baling corn stalks with no cutting involved because owner shredded it. It's only a problem if the stalks get too dry or not a large enough windrow. Have baled as many as 5 bales/acre of 4x51/2 size with a JD 467 baler. Most cattlemen like corn stalks better than Milo stalks.

baling cornstalks was unheard of here until year before last when we had a severe drought. the message that I got was that it was low quality feed but better than no feed. I don't know what guys were charging to bale it, but I did hear some folks say that it was hard on the balers.
