Green Chopping

Does anybody out there still green chop. I remember doing it as a kids for the dairy cows but we haven/t done it in years. I see a chopper for sale locally and I was thinking of buying it to green chop for our beef cows. Is this a good practice for beef cows. Pastures are getting thin but I have some waterways etc.. that I could chop for green feed. Another question can I give some to the steers that have not been on pasture? Any input would be great.

I just finished chopping 60 acres of "green corn for holstein steers that will go to slaughter. The steers have been on pasture and hay all summer and the will get a combo of hay and silage this winter (at least the ones that don"t go to market). I put the silage in a makeshift bunker silo and blew in what i could in a traditional silo. Just keep in mind that the corn should not be too green or too dry. One it won"t compact its self and you will have freezing problems and the other may create rot...
 
I green chop in the fall,usually have no room for baled hay,as far as giving it to your steers just start out with small loads slowly get them use to it then give them what ever they will eat.
 
I have been chopping the corn along the waterways as my pasture is done and we can't get the cows out on harvested cropland to graze because we don't have any harvested acres!
 
I chop green corn for my beef cattle before it gets time to put up silage. No one else around here does it though because almost all of the beef operations are cow-calf. We finish ours out and direct market it.
 
I green chop hay whenever the pasture dictates that I should, and also greenchop corn when the silo unloader is raised for filling. (doing both right now - 2 loads 3rd crop clover/alfalfa and 1 of corn) Should work for waht you want... just dont' switch the diet of the ones not on pasture all at once.
