hydraulic cylinder shaft

Can anyone tell me if a shaft/rod in a hydraulic cylinder, can be cut off 1 1/2" (threaded part)and the end be re-threaded? Being it is harden metal and crome plated.... I was told it can not be done.Is this true?

Yes,it can be done. I had 2 lift cylinders here for a loader. The tubes were shot but the rams were good. The bucket cylinders used the same diameter ram,but shorter. They had the T type end. Well, over the years the one boy, then myself broke the threaded end off inside the bucket cylinder. I shortened both of those lift cylinder rams by cutting the T ends off the longer rams and welding them back on. And they had to pull to tilt the bucket back and hold the weight. They both held dispite the fact that I did the welding.
Take the ram out of the cylinder before you cut or weld on it though so you don't burn up the seal.

Some will cut and machine. Some will take the teeth off the bimetal saw blade and won't even be scratched.

He is asking if you can cut off the rod and rethread the cut end. It can be done but you have to grind off the chrome surface first unless the machine shop has a bit that will machine the case hardend shell.

Without a doubt it can be done, it"s done all the time. In fact when the rod was manufactured from the factory it was done from a piece of chromed stock, not made and then chromed. All you have to do is find a shop that knows what their doing (and if it"s still in business in the current economy they probably do), and they ought to be able to fix you right up.
