Skunk Oder Remover

Some time ago on here, someone post a home brew for taking the skunk smell off of dogs. I thought I printed it out, but if I did, I can't find it. Wife's little Jack Russel got hit this morning, not terrible, but still can smell it some when she gets up close. I had bought some Odor Eliminator a few years ago, just in case this ever happened. I shook it up and soaked the dog with it, but I can still smell it. Anyone have the recipe? Chris

1 liter (or quart) white vinegar OR 3% hydrogen peroxide (peroxide may cause bleaching)

1/4 c. Baking soda.

1 tsp. dish detergent (also a de-greaser

get two big botles of hydrogen peroxide and big box of baken soda and small amount of water in bath tub. when i got hit with skunk taken all smell off. works great

My wife has a pet grooming business and deskunks dogs frequently. Dan's formula is what she does - reccommends Dawn dish detergent.

Hint given on the local news one night, was to use Massengil. Yeah, I know. But they said that it works. They also said that you have to use the powdered type, not the liquid.

I've used this one with the peroxide, and it REALLY works. We had a Black Lab, and a Jack Russell Terrier who got zapped. They wanted outside, and before I could tell the wife NO!, she had opened the door. I had heard something on the back porch, and had figured it to be a critter, possibly a skunk. Th dogs were barking, and then all of a sudden, yelping. The Black Lab being a bit of a coward, did not get a bad hit, but the little Terrier did. She was foaming, and tears running. Wife called her Dad and asked about a remedy, and he said they would just have to stay outside. A quick Internet check turned up the Peroxide, Baking Soda, and Dish Soap formula. We mixed it up, put on gloves, and particle masks, and sponged the dogs down. Let them run a few minutes, and then rinsed them off. Worked GREAT! Well, except for the Lab, he had Red and Blonde streaks... Every now and then when the Jack Russell got wet, you could get a little smell from her snout, but it was not very strong. They never bothered to go after another skunk.

Rumor has it Massengil and vinegar. Some lady told me about it and swears by it. My lab got it point blank in the face one time, and it was beyond skunk was so bad. He got the concentrated industrial strength squirt. I tried tomato based everything and that did squat. It took about two days just to get him smelling like a skunk. A few days later after it mostly wore off, a lady friend told me about the Massengil and vinegar thing, and I want to the store and was so embarrassed to buy it, I bought a case of it because I was determined to never have to buy that stuff again. I have to admit, it took off the remainder of the smell, so might have worked initially as well. Two things came out of that. After I bought a case of Massengil, he never got sprayed again, so I guess it acted like insurance. The other thing is that his eye on the side of the face he got sprayed in mattered up quite a bit for years until the day he died of old age. Right after that happened, a friend of mine told me that his dogs eyes mattered up too after getting sprayed in the face, eyes like my Lou did, so I asked the vet, and the vet agreed, but there wasn't anything that she could really do except give him some medicated jelly stuff to put in it occasionally when it seemed to be bothering him. I sure do miss that dog. He was one of my best, and I've had a lot of good ones, and got a couple now. One thing about that boy, he always used to leave the toilet seat up and my female would complain cause she'd sit down and always fall in and get her tail soaked. Grin

Take care of your dogs, and good luck.

Hard to describe, just about the worst, nastiest smell you can imagine. Ever been around rotten soybeans? Not nearly as bad as skunk. Just be glad you don't know what it smells like, you would never forget it. Chris

The best thing I have found is pine tar soap, specifically I have used Grandpa's Pine Tar soap, but I'm sure there are other brands out there.
