paint for 5020 John Deere

Have a 1967 John Deere 5020 I'm restoring and am wondering about using "clear coat" spray paint over my paint job for a higher, body shop type sheen. Fenders and hood painted in body shop so trying to match their sheen or high gloss look.

Thanks for any help with this.

Are you trying to achieve the look it had when it left the factory or are you under the delusion that it's a fine motorcar and needs to appear as such???

What'd you use for the base paint? Hardened enamel or urethane should be OK but some enamels if un-hardened will crinkle up from the solvents in some clear coats. Don't ask how I know! Ask a paint expert who knows his stuff just to be sure the clear is compatible.

It's very discouraging to destroy a really nice paint job that you've spent a lot of time on to get just right. BTDT!!!!!!

I just got done stripping and sanding the paint I had just sprayed on a walk-in door to my shop cause I was out of the right enamel thinner so I used lacquor thinner instead. The first coat looked great- the second coat crinkeled up. This was just a simple flat door so I wasn't set back much, but it's an example of how things can go wrong so easily. Imagine this happening to a whole tractor!Jim

Used what was used on the fenders & hood. You should use a supplied air system when spraying any of this paint with hardner. Hal

Thanks to all for your responses to my tractor paint question. Compatibility. Good point. Recently experienced a lack of this with a picnic table. Thank goodness not the tractor !
