O/T Big Dodge does it again

At the farm last w/e it started raining around 6:30 Saturday evening and kept it up all night.

We don't have a barn or any shelter for the horses yet and I went out about 10:00 Sunday morning (still raining) to check on them. Water puddling in all the low spots, running down the hill, ground soggy and soaked and rain in the forecast all week.

Temp was in the upper 60's. With the rain being steady all night and into Sunday morning, the horses were beginning to shiver. My big horse trailer (6000 lbs) was still hooked up our 95 Dodge 3500 dually, 4x4, with 5 sp man tranny & Cummins diesel.

I told James we were going to have to take the horses back to Dallas if I could get the trailer out.

The trailer was parked in its usual spot, but to get it out meant a turn around and uphill pull on grassy, soggy ground. To make matters worse, I had to maneuver between a tree and the pipe corral, which is not a problem on dry ground, but any slipping or sliding and things would become a disaster fast. I figured my chances of getting that trailer to the driveway and solid, paved ground were slim and none.

Got the keys, cranked the Dodge up engaged the 4wd to 4 wheel low, then shifted into granny gear. With the tranny in 4 wheel low, granny gear was too low, wouldn't be able to get any speed to make the uphill. Shifted to 2nd gear, eased out the clutch, gave it some gas and started the turn and uphill pull.

Big ol' Dodge never slipped or even spun a tire. Pulled that big trailer around and up the incline (and between the tree and the corral) like it was on dry ground.

We bought the truck new in 95 and I've logged thousands of miles pulling a horse trailer, but even after all these years and miles driving that truck, I was impressed. I really didn't think I was going to get the trailer to the driveway and paved ground, but it did and made it easy.

Always amazes me what they will do....I have an 01 cummins 4WD dually extended cab and I love the truck.
Sounds like the guy upstairs might have known them horses were gettin cold and gave ya little push!!!.

Boy....Our horses would love to come stay with you...................... They go out when the spring flowers start to pop out and come in about November/December and have fruit trees to stand under if they want. Most of the time, they'll be right out enjoying the shower. You can make a real serviceable and not real bad looking temp. stall/paddock with a cheap 10x10 (or so) picnic canopy and electric fence. Sure beats a long drive in the middle of the night.
What we wouldn't do for our babies.................

Hi Nancy: My son has one of those Big D's. it is a 96 equip like yours. Got about 300,000 and has drug a Stock Trailer all over with the show string. The longest from OKlahoma to Madison Wisconsin or Louisville Kentucky. Stop only for fuel and--. I have rode many a mile in shot- gun. Sure miss not being able to go know. They are one heck of a truck. Front end can be a litle weak with that engine. Not bad if you can do all of the work except realignment yourself. Of course pulling a twenty-five foot flat-bed around in a hay field is doesn't help a lot.

Yup, front end is a weak point. Replaced the stabilizer bar years ago and about 2 yrs ago had some f/e work done. Our truck is closing in on the 300,000 mark and has been the most trouble free vehicle we"ve had.

Even 4x4 duallies can get mired especially with a load and going uphill. Since we have sandy soil and had gotten over 3 inches of rain, that type of ground can literally turn to the consistency of pudding. BTDT with a tractor.

Myself, I expect the front end of a diesel dually to sink, and the back end to float and slip (fewer psi on the tread to surface). Having a trailer helps with that a lot.

nancy are you sure that truck isnt a chevy duramax sure sounds like something my ol chevy would do. just kidding have a nice day. RICK

Should of hooked one of those JD70's to it and drug the truck and trailer and all up and out of there !

Still can't figure out why you went to a Ford after such good luck with your Dodge ?
