3 cylinder diesel engine problem. What do I expect?

I have a 510 John Deere Tractor with a 3 cylinder Diesel engine, tractor built in Germany.
The engine had some blow by out the exit pipe for some time now prior to the loss of power problem below but it worked fine.

While ploughing the engine suddenly lost its power,no steam from the rad but black smoke poured out the stack. However,It contnued to run and I limped it back to the yard.
I discovered the fan belt a bit loose. The oil was slightly higher on the stick might this indicate a blown head gasket? What other checks can I make to determine the problem here? Thank you in advance.

BLACK smoke pouring from the exhaust. Check for a plugged-up air filter or some other restriction in the air intake system.

Sounds Like It is singing it's Death song ....Could be the injector pump is leaking fuel into the crankcase , Had a 800Case pull that trick some 15 yrs. ago , The Case Is repaired and POWERFUL today ,...... How much over full is the crankcase ,,,??? 2 qts? IMO.extra could allow the motor to pick up and burn off excess , Thence causing all the smoke ,,, At any rate, Change oil , if you are not ready to send the pump to a shop ,, ,, drop the plow off, and do light running errands and the like , and monitor the oil level ,, The pump leak will only get worse and will tell on itself ....

I'd leave it sit overnight, then open the drain plug on the oil pan. See if you get water coming out or at least milky oil. Also see if ti smells like fuel...
Given that there's no turbo on the old Lanz, I doubt that's the problem.

If it's not a head gasket issue, it's probably a fuel issue. I suspect that it probably blew an injector tip off, perhaps because of water in the fuel.

If there's no water in the oil, put the pug back and start the engine. Open the injector ines one at a time and see which one doesn't cause a loss of RPM or make theengine stagger. The one that doesn't is the bad cylinder. At that point you can pull the injector and look at it. If nothign obvious, swap the injector with one of the others and see if the problem follows the injector or stays in the cylinder... That way you know if it's a cylinder/compression problem or an injector problem.
I'm betting on an injector given you have no power, smoke and increased oil level.... IF it's not a head gasket/liner issue... but you should find that the coolant is down and you'll find it in the oil.

Check the air intake - not enough clean air volume to satisfy combustion pressures. Diesel burning raw.

Something in the oil and black smokes makes me think that the engine is getting way to much fuel. Id say you have a injector problem. Smell the oil, if it smells alot like diesel you probably had some washdown from a injector hanging up or blowing out. Run the engine and loosen up 1 injector line at a time like what someone else said. That will help you find the problem. Or you may just want to pull the injectors.

Hello Ron Corkum,
Blake smoke is usually caused by ovefueling.
Clogged air cleaner will give the same results.
Restriction should not be above 25" of water column. Take out the element and see if it cleares up. If the engine is missing, its possible that 1 injector tip broke off, or cracked and the fuel is just going in dribling.
Many other things can produce the same black smoke. Broken push rod, valve adjuster coming loose. Start checking!

The possible cause:I found weed flak drawn in over the rad, heavy in the area of the engine air intake area and air filtration system.I cleaned up the area by hand then removed the filter,it was reasonaby clean.Unable to get a new one,I washed ,cleaned up and replaced the old filter and added a new oil bath.

The one thing that seemed unusual,I found here.Below the old oil bath was a layer of blue coolent.

I had installed a new head gasket last summer when an overheating issue at that time blew the head gasket to the outside spraying out coolent.
I did not check or change the filtration oil bath at that time nor until now.
Could this be coolent left from the earlier blown gasket or may this relate to my problem now?
When I checked this morning after leaving the tractor sit overnight, the engine oil was dark, and no diesel odour was evident. When left the oil to stand,it had a very slight mirky skim trail in it which does not appear to be much of anything really.
I ran the engine a bit today the smoke was grey at first then changed to a light diesel burning colour. There was no evidemce of the thick black smoke like expierenced when it lost power.
I plan to tighten the fan belt, and give her a working test tomorrow some time.My progress to date. Thanks

Hello Ron Corkum,
Like a said easy, thing to check is the air filter.
Sounds like it had coolant still left from the last blowout you had.
Now get it hot, and let the accumulated fuel blow out the stack.
Guido.

Thanks for your tips.I will get her hot to burn off the excess fuel and see how she works.I feel she should be back to normal,we will see!
Right now,I am doing the generator up before I reinstall and adjust the belt to put her through the warm up stage.
Ron
