My 1997 Ford F-150, 4.6 L Triton V8, extended cab. When cold, if I just trun the key directly to start, the truck starts but sputters something terrible for about 10 seconds and then finally picks up runs smoothly. If I turn the key on and count to 15, then start all is well. I recently changed the fuel filter. What is going on? Is my fuel pump getting weak? How to further check it out and fix? Thanks. Tom

My '97 Dodge 318 did similar. Everyone thought it was the pump-check valve not keeping gas at the injectors when shut off, so started hard. BUT, fortunately before I replaced it, found out it was the ignition coil going bad. Greg

Maybe airlock in line. Stab in the dark. Could new filter be restrictive in some way, maybe wrong type or installed backwards where check valve would not work properly if used at all. Please post when solved. Da ve
