I just saw a ad in a local farm paper here in NY, a guy is looking for a New Idea cut ditioner. I had a NI 272 years ago and I hated the thing. I had to go slow with it mowing, and it cut terrible, sharpening the teeth was a pain. Anyway I got the NH489 to replace it.
Can anyone tell me anything these mowers were good for? Or why they were even made? I also seem to think the thing used more power than my 489. Just wondering about them. j

Yes,I'm looking for one. I had one for 13 years, used it to cut hay. Never should have sold it. I agree that they weren't the best outfit to cut hay,but I want one to cut corn stalks to bale. We have some stoney ground around here and those paddles on a cut/ditioner are a lot tougher than the knives on a stalk chopper. You can bound a rock the size of a softball off the inside of those things and not hurt a thing. MC had a rotary scythe they called it,about the same thing, except that they had a bolt on knife and the bolts tended to break if you hit a rock with'em.

Why were they made? Well, they were simple. They wanted to get away from a cycle bar for the same reasons that the discbines came out.

rrlund, I have one of those things and I would almost give it to you. I don't think you would want to come all the way to N. C. to get it though. If you do, it will be very cheap.
