trade 8n for Yanmar1500

I have a clean but not shinny 51 8N with a trip bucket. The break and clutch pedals are not even worn so it's got a lot of life left in it. I just use it around the yard and grade the drivway. My neighbor has a refirbished Yanmar 1500 with an American made loader on it. Bought 2 years ago for 6K. He needs a bigger tractor because he wants to have a big garden. Is this an even trade or should I stick with my good old 8N?

I don"t know what the Yanmar equates to in the John Deere sizes that were sold here in the 80"s.

I had a JD 1050 that was Yanmar built and a 33 horse diesel engine (turbocharged). That was the best little tractor I ever owned. It seemingly ran on fumes, never ever failed to start in the 23 years I owned it. The original Yuasa battery lasted 17 years! The weaknesses are the brakes.....no worse than an 8N"s, though. And, I always longed for power steering....which was a dealer add-on. The hydraulics were top drawer and for a machine it"s size....very powerful. I sold mine 3 years ago with 1499 actual hours, for $5000. All I ever used it for around the place was to mow 2 acres of grass and plow the garden once a year. At roughly 3,000 pounds, they"re a tad light, especially in the nose.

I've never owned a Yanmar so I really can't make a negative or positive statement about them. I can say though that Yanmar tractors are neat looking machines but if the decision was mine to make I would keep the 8N Ford and here is why:
1. 8N parts are readily available.
2. 8N tractors are very reliable.
3. 8N tractors are collectable.
4. 8N tractors will be worth more 10 years down the road than any refurbished Yanmar.
I probably would keep the 8N if it were mine.

Does the term,"refurbished" mean that the Yanmar is a grey market tractor with no dealer support?
If that is the case, will you be stuck holding a machine that no dealer cn or will supply parts for?

Michael,

I"ve owned an 8N and now have a Yanmar 1500. Its sort like an apples and oranges debate. Different machines for different purposes.

If they were one thing that would say watch out it would be the "refurbished". Some of these grey market Yanmars were rebuilt in Vietnam and reports filter in of mismatched components. Absent that, its a good small tractor running about 17.5 HP, 2 cyl diesel. Most parts are available from several dealers.

Bob, part of the reason I'm thinking of trading is because I'm moving to Arizona at the end of the month. How do you like it? I'll be North of Phoenix in New River. The houses we are making offers on are on just over an acer and I will only need this refirbished grey market tractor for yard work and driveway maintinence. How do these small Yanmars do grading dirt driveways and roads. I'm thinking it may be too small.
