One of the four 4 wheel drive tractors making a pile of silage at thr ND/SD border. 4 piles made in all 100,000 acres chopped.

Wow, them would be big piles. 25,000 acres to the pile. Feed about 25,000 head for six months per pile.

The feed is used for two very large dairy"s in the area. That includes the replacements and calf ranches.
 
OK, I have seen trenches around here...but thats crazy. So heres the question. How do they dig out a pile that tall to load the mixer wagons. You would have to make a trail in to get to the top of the pile so that it didnt collapse on you. But, you would have to keep loading the trail so that it didnt spoil...sounds like fun. Wonder how many tires they use to hold the plastic down...
 
One tool is called a facer that mounts on a skid steer or loader. It is kind of like a roto-tiller and is hydraulically powered. They come in different sizes and a tall or long one that is mounted in the bucket of a wheel loader would probably reach 30 ft high. They bring down enough to fill your truck mounted mixer wagon real quick.
