Long Tractors?

Someone I know wants me to go look at a Long 310 with him. I have never seen one of these in person let alone heard anything about them. If anyone has any information on these, such as they start hard, go faster backwards than forwards, and weather or not he should just scream and run it would be much appreciated. From the pictures it's a cute little thing with a loader and a brush hog. I tried this in the Lesser Known Classics category with no luck.

About 30 years ago some friends bought one primarily to use in the woods as a skidder. They said that it worked and that they worked it hard but after I think about five years they replaced it with a Ford. I would say that this one was about 60 HP. There was a little story in Antique Power a few years ago about Long. They were originally built in the US, I believe it was in the Southeast, Then went over to Romania or somewhere around there.

If wrong...I stand corrected. My friend had a number of them. Good working tractors...just had oil leaks all the time.
The components came from Eastern Europe and were assembled in North Carolina.
A 310 I think should be around 30-35 HP.
Not a real bad tractor...but you just have to put up with the leaks.

Dad had a new 610 in the 80's. Only kept it for about 3 years.

It was our loader tractor and it would not pick up a bale of hay on the 3pt after the oil warmed up.

The dealer worked on it many times to try and correct it.

They decided the 3 pt did not have the capacity to pick up a bale. Dad bought the Long for the purpose of moving bales and loader work.

Traded it for a Hesston and got the job done just fine.

Looking in the book, the 310 was built from 1980-1990, makes 28 PTO HP, sold for $8515 new, and depending on age and condition would sell for around $3,000.00 now.

I"ve owned a 2510 for about 10 years. It is one of the most dependable tractors I have. Yes, the hydraulics are weak but so are they on my JD.
They are a little on the clunky side but will deliver more hp for gallon of fuel than anything I own. They are made in Romania and have been for more than 60 years. A little rough but will take a lot of abuse. I"m not sure I"d recommend it for loader use.

Dad sold many of these in Owensboro Ky - Southern Ind. area. He always said they had the
most horsepower for money invested.

There"s lots of comments on the various Long models in the archives here, ranging from very good to very bad, depending on the posters experience...
Long built a few Model A"s with Cont F162, then began importing; Poland and Romania have been mentioned, as I recall...
You"ll want to review the archives, and check on parts availability and price, comments re" which also seem to range all over the map.
importtractorparts.net has been mentioned for Long parts. Good luck.

Don't know about the 310 but I owned a 445 Long about 15 years ago and had trouble with it, spent a lot of money on it, about $1600 if I remember correctly on the engine, ended up losing money when I sold it. Was hard to get parts for at the time I owned it because the nearest dealer was 3 hours away and it took him several months to get me a set of rings for it because it had a Fiat engine. Still see some Longs from time to time but all are parked in the weeds, don't know when I've seen one running last. There are a lot of Farmtracs(Longs) in my area that seem to be decent machines, the Farmtracs look a lot like a New Holland.

That model Long was built in a Fiat owned factory in Romania.Fiat also built tractors for AC,Oliver,
MM and their own brand UTB.I have several of them in all the different
Makes and I like them. They are easy on fuel and usually hold up well if maintained.Import Tractor in Ontario Canada has about any part you'd need for the Fiat built units at very reasonable prices.

I've got a 445 with 4K hours on it. It leaks all over but runs great and uses very little fuel. Parts are easy to get if ya use the internet.
