squirrels in water trough

never had this happen til this year...
squirrels falling in to horse troughs and drowning. have found 5 in the last 2 weeks. This trough is 300 yards from the nearest tree! plus, it"s been raining cats and dogs out here, so there is plenty of water.

I"ve had mice fall into 5 gallon pails and drown in a few inches of water- usually see this in winter during a hard freeze. The squirrel thing is kind of weird.

I tossed a tree branch in to give them something to climb out on...hopefully no more "floaters"!

this spring my dad came home from town and found a squirrel in the toilet pretty well drowned.

At the place in North Dakota we have what we call bird boards in the water tanks. This allows anything that gets in to get out. There is a technique you must use as the critters seem to swim around the outside till they drowned.

That is a trick I have seen many folks use who had a water tank close to woods. Drive a t post beside the tank and wire a stick of some sort to the post sticking down in the water. A few feet of nylon rope tied to a post beside the tank works too.

The woods! in ND, I am not sure what your talking about (LOL). I like the rope idea, I bet a net drapped over the side, or even old tire chains, would even work better,

I had that happen once, but only once. I figured the little bugger
got used to drinking out of the tank, then I was gone for a couple of days and it fell in trying to reach the water. Felt kinda bad about it. I don't like to see anything die for no reason. But I guess it is Darwinism in action.

We have had that happen a few times this year. I was going to put ropes down over the troughs for them to climb out.

You're lucky. I have to shoot them first with a pellet gun to keep them out of the bird feeder. Then I throw them in the river to feed the gators.

We were doing that for the past week and a half at moose camp.
5 gallon pail, wire, pop can, peanut butter,a board and a gallon of water. Caught over a dozen mice.
