Allis D14 vs Ford 861

Have been looking at a mid fifties Ford 861 with hydraulic ford loader, heat house and box scraper for $4700 and just found a 1957 Allis Chalmers D14 with trip bucket and 5ft back blade for $3650. I'm torn between the two.... Would be used for snow removal and small projects. Any opinions? Thanks. dc

The 861 is the better of the two. We tried a demo 861 and a demo D-14. New tractors. The 861 pulled 3 14 inch mounted plows about as easily as the D-14 pulled two. There was no way that little D-14 could have pulled three plows in that soil. The 861 had fluid and full weights front and rear. The D-14 just had fluid but its problem wasn't traction, it was power.

The trip bucket loader is not useful in snow. Snow isn't heavy enough most of the time to tilt the bucket.

That is one of those apples and oranges things. The D-14 is not in the same class as the 861 is as in the D-14 is 34HP and the 861 is 48HP. The 861 is all around a lot bigger then the D-14 plus has live hyds and live PTO plus probably a hyd bucket on the loader. So all around the 861 with what is has with it is a better bargain the the D-14 is

861 is a significantly more powerful tractor. A fully hydraulic loader is a whole lot more convienient. On the other hand a trip bucket loader is not bad for clearing snow. I know someone said that the snow was not heavy enough to tilt the bucket. My experience has been that is not a problem. Every trip bucket I have worked with will tilt even when empty.

Back to clearing snow... depending on where you are and how much snow you get, the back blade might be very handy for clearing snow. Can't imagine the box blade would do much for you on snow.

Are the tractors in similar condition?

Thanks for all the input guys. I'm going to see if I can make a deal on the ford. I really like the look of that old Allis but the full hydros and the extra power on the ford have won me over.
