91 caddy rear wheel drive would give a little bump when releasing brakes from a light. Thought was U joints. They are ok. Careful attention seemed like rear wheels were not working in sync. One rear had year old lining almost gone and adjustment was loose. Other side fine. Son thinks there is equalizing valve on rears that is faulty, or do I just replace both and hope for better wear? Thanks- Dave This car is my baby, trying for 200K miles. Real close p.s. somebody said I need real asbestos linings. From where???

No valves, check the parking brake, the cables will stick. When you replace the brake shoes replace all of the hardware and wheel cyl. too. You will get a lot of advice mostly from people that do not have a clue how to fix a brake system,we call them parts changers.( On a car that old I would recommend replacing the parking brake cables too, if I was inspecting them in person I might think differently.

Check the upper control arm bushings. In engine compartment...each side of engine.

How do you know if your upper control arm bushings are going bad? One of the easiest ways is to physically inspect them. If the rubber part of the bushing is deteriorated, cracked or even missing, it is time to replace them. If every time you pull forward or back up you hear a clunking sound or actually feel the car’s front suspension move forward or back, replacement is the answer. Sometimes the car will actually pull to the side that needs replaced every time you step on the brakes, acting just like a brake that is pulling.

on rear drive, check axle bearings too as long as you are in there with that many miles. a really bad bearing could help wear the bottom half of your linings off and then some.

i've had new riveted linings break an edge off and that little piece causes all kinds of trouble. chinese made.

check parking cables as suggested.

wrong parts or rusted parts or missing parts can cause strange things to happen. so can parts installed the wrong way.

this is a drum brake system, right?

good luck, you may need a professional if you are in over your head.

Aloha,
Maybe the flexible brake hose has collapsed so it is not releasing fast enough and also causing a drag. TIA

I have found that on the big Gm cars including Buick,Olds,Caddilac and Pontiac that leaking wheel cylinders will cause that very problem. The cars from the ninties up were bad about that. When changing them out always do both sides.

I also said if I was inspecting it in person I might have a different option. I am ASE Certified in hyd brake systems and air brakes plus a few more.

You talk the talk but can you walk the walk? I'm not saying you can't but, that ASE cert is just a peice of paper.Anyone who can read and study can get one.Hands on experience is what gets the job done correctly.I know lots of parts changers also and some of them are ASE certified.I know some ASE certified guys that are master mechanics and i know some mechanics who are not certified.I'm sure you are proud of your certification but, this is not the place to brag about it.
