lead ring for head bolts

Can someone tell Me for sure if the lead rings go on the head bolts under the head gasket or above the head gasket and then tighten down with the head in place. This is on a 1937 unstyled John Deere "B" Thanks for any help Pat. P.

The lead washers go between the bolt heads and the cylinder head. Their purpose is to act as a sealer.

Thanks a Bunch for the info. I had heard that from friend but didn't believe Him, just seems like they would be destroyed by tighten up to 96 # maybe they just mash down into the crack around the head bolt and do the job, huh? When I took the head off a few days ago what was left of the old washers was down between the head and block, someone must have put them on wrong that time. I had a hard time getting the head off because they had put some kind of sealent on both sides of the gasket. You never know what You'll run into when You get a tractor at a auction. I still "Love Her Tho" the J D that is. Pat. P.

Make new washers from lead chimney flashing.New ones from JD are very high.Leather punches will make accurate holes.

New ones from John Deere are NOT very expensive they are around 90 cents each!
