O/T Geography - anyone from PA?

On road trips, I try to entertain the grandkids (and myself) with map quizzes. Like starting up in Maine, and going down the coast, all the way around the borders naming only the states, in order, that are along the border of our country. A question I couldn't answer was about Pennsylvania. I know (I think) that PA (Phila) has access to ocean traffic - does it actually touch the Atlantic, or is access by Delaware River? thanks

Philadelphia is located up the Delaware River so that wooden ships which were docked there sat in fresh water, which made them last longer. I'm pretty sure the tide reaches far enough up from the Delaware Bay that some of Pennsylvania touches saltwater.

Hi Riverslim,

To answer your question, Pa. has contact through the Delaware River and Bay for ocean going vessels, And if you want to get nitpicky you could say we have coastline on Lake Erie.

b. no
c. yes, borders the Delaware Estuary.

and that from an Aussie [ with the help of Wikipedia] but I did know the Brits sailed their war ships up the Delaware way back when, actually I think it features heavily in your Independance struggle.

sailed the USS KITTY HAWK CVA-63down the delewer river out of philly in april 1963 after comisining. not mutch room on either side, had to lower the mast to go under one bridge,

Hi Tom, wooden ships almost always get the rain water rinsed off with salt water so that they will last longer.
