IH 656 Fuel Gauge

I have a IH 656 tractor and the fuel gauge doesn't work. Where do I start in turns of finding out why it doesn't work. Any help would be great.

Test all the wiring, the wire going to the tank is grounded thru the resistor in the sending unit inside the tank.

Usually if all the wiring is good and you ground the wire that goes to the sending unit the guage will read full.

On older industrial equipment there is a voltage regulator that all the guages get their voltage from. Sometimes this goes bad so disconnect your sending unit then check at your gauge first to make sure you have power going to it.

To check the sending unit just pull out of tank, with unit disconnected from wires using an ohm meter, move the float up and down it will move the needle back and forth if good.
