OT-Hay Barn Roof Leaking

I have 400 square bales in a small barn that i have recently repaired and it"s still leaking water down onto the bales. Not alot, but enough to concern me. I nailed used sheet metal to roof and thought it would keep the water out. I think it"s coming in through the old nail holes in the sheet metal. My best idea is climb back up there and caulk the holes. Any better ideas? Thanks for your help.

the caulk called "gutter and lap" that is gray will last for many many MANY years. It is very thick going on and I used it on a lot of the same type stuff you are talking about. You can also paint the roof with Elastrometric White paint that will seal smal holes if time is an issue. It will last a good while too and make the roof cooler because it is white. Just ideas to think about.

Thanks for your input. I'll try caulking it this weekend and see how it works. Just wanted to check with all the experts first.

Knight,

I hope it"s not so obvious as to be meaningless, but the one thing that I"d add is to look for any nails that are loose in the metal. If you find any, don"t even think about driving them back in. Pull them out. If possible, screw in a roofing screw into the existing hole. If it doesn"t bite, take it out too. Then caulk over the screwhead/hole with whatever kind of caulk you"re going to use.

Good luck,

Had an old timer tell me that if you want to keep a nail hole in a metal roof from leaking to take a center punch and whack it from the inside, buglewouthing it upward and the only water that will get in it is a drop that hits right on the hole. Of course this would only work on holes out in the open. Sounds reasonable to me...I'll pass it along to the crowd. ohfred
