Kids on Garden tractors at shows = should be illegal

A kid, about 3 foot 6 on a cub cadet going pretty fast basically plowed me down today. Kid proceeded to look at me and back up and hurry off before I sent him to juvenile delinquent camp.

My leg has a pretty good longitudal bruise where the hood of the tractor clobbered me sideways. You know, one of those annoying 3" straight pipe hammering things.

Saw someone really pizzed off today about a foot long red colored scratch on their Dodge pickup - about kid on lawnmower height.

Other than little brats on lawnmowers, my family had a great time today at a MD steamshow.

I'm not one to sue anyone for their kid running me over, but this is absurd to have kids going 7 mph on MTD and crapsman mowers with straight pipes.

Am I the only one out there that doesn't see this? Whatever happened to farm safety?

Their parents will let them go until something happens that outlaws the entire use of motorized equipment at All shows.....

The best is when they find a hill to jump there "lawnmowers" or do a hill clime, The kind of hill i wouldnt walk down just wait till they cause someone harm or flip the tractor over on themself, sad but very true

Sorry to hear that. Been over there for the past 3 days and haven't seen any irresponsible behavior excepting bicycles, and they weren't really too bad.

Rob,

I was there today , I agree there are too many
kids on lawn tractors, but my real complaint is
not the number of them , it is the way they
drive them. It used to be those on tractors were
the older group that had bad knees or other
troubles and could not walk all day,now it is
the kids that don't need a ride.

I think they need a designated driving area just for youngsters. But most shows' insurance you must be 16 to drive any vehicle on the grounds.

At our annually show we had such a record crowd this year that we are talking about making one way traffic on the grounds for golf carts, people movers and tractors. We need to do this for safety.

It is not the kids it is the parents.
Children are most often a reflection of their parents.

Saw a similar thing ALL most happen at the Nowthen show here in MN. An old man - must have been hard of hearing - backed up about the time a kid drove by on his squirrley LGT. Kid never slowed down but someone pulled the old guy out of his way. If I had been 10' closer I was looking at the over long spark plug wire. Would have snatched it clean out of his rig and heaved it as far as I could. Would have got buzzed but it would have worth it.
I hope you get to feeling better.

I see both sides of the question. Usd to be the only garden tractor you saw a really old two wheel type or one someone had mounted his hit
& miss on to ride around slowly. Not so anymore. One of my friends commented about the largest golf cart show on earth, maybe more truth in that. I have a hard time believing that all those riding golf carts, etc. really need to. I'm not talking about those of us that genuinely need a way to get around, they can ride on anything they want forever as far as I'm concerned. Besides someday I may need one myself. I'd like to think that those kids on lawn mowers may someday develop an appreciation for our hobby, but I wonder.
Just my opinion,
Paul

The Elnora show here is requiring a 5 dollar registration next year and insurance certificate. Went to the Half Century Show and was nearly run over. I won't go back. Someone should start a ride'em event so people can just go drive around all day, they can't be looking or they would see the people they are running over,

To many things are being treated as toys by the kids. In a controlled enviroment I am still not a fan. If a parent signs a release, ok maybe. These kids are not legally liable for anything, just wait for a serious accident and watch the lawsuits fly

gmd,

I was at arcadia today and I think Rob was
also, i saw dave reed there (otto gas engine
works).
Where you there also?

I was at a sale one time, when as it was ending, an old man climbed into a long sedan car and proceeded to pull straight into a very nice parked pickup...

He tried turning, backing, etc, and rocked and dented and scraped the pickup several times as he tried to get by - with the whole auctioneer crew and crowd looking on in horror/amazement...

Come to find out it was the auctioneer himself who was getting senile and just flat too old to drive anymore...

Anyway - my point is - and sure not to say that kids ought to be running around on lawn mowers at the shows - but things happen no matter what age...

I agree that there is a lot of wheeled traffic in a walking area. Saw a close call at the RPRU last year.

Rob: I'm with you, but it's not only kids, just too damn many motorized vehicles running the walking areas at shows. It should be the same as I told a guy at the beer store. 6', 180lb, 35 year old wanted carry out on two 24s of beer. Older lady working the cash happened to be alone and would have to leave cash. I told him if he wasn't able to carry two, 24s, he shouldn't be drinking the damn beer. Same applies to those folks too lazy to walk the show, shouldn't be there.

I will go along with elderly with health certificate having electric carts. Definitely not these kids, their time on the lawn tractor should be in the show ring as events are scheduled.

Here's the answer.... only allow these things, and only for folks with a disability. Hard to enjoy any show when you have to watch out for everyone else. These and wheelchairs should be the only wheeled vehicles allowed on the show area.

My father is 97. he has had one hip and both knees replaced. without the electric scooter, or the Kawasaki mule. (I drive it,chaffur him around) he would never be able to enjoy these shows. I agree that some people ride around that should be walking. but I hope that shows are careful about how far they go to ban motorized pedestrian traffic. Ban it all and we will not be there. Also any restrictions on vehicles must be ofset with better shuttle systems. some shows do a poor job of moving people around. some of these shows should take a look at how rolag does it and try to be more like them.

I don't think a kid should be driving anything around in any crowd! Period! They're young and able to walk.

This past week I went to the Clay County Fair a couple of times. For those of you who've never heard of it, the attendance is in the area of 29,000 to 35,000 people per day so it's no lightweight event. Anyway, I about got my foot run over by motorized scooters several times. The fairgrounds cover a lot of area, and I sympathize with the folks who can't walk far enough to see enjoy the events, but when they are driving those things in a shoulder-to-shoulder crowd, one sideways step by someone can lead to some black and blue toes.

I have heard that able bodied people are starting to use those scooters just because they don't care to walk. It reminds me of that song from back in the seventies, and I can't remember the name of it, where he sings about machines doing everything for us in the future. "Our legs won't have nothing to do and our arms will hang limp at our sides".Jim

I happen to be one of those old broken down former dairyman. I have a electric wheel chair. Both knees have been replaced and feet and ankles shot. Over the last six years I have attended many state and national shows. My experience have been that people are so buzzy flapping there lips that they do not look where they are going and will walk right into you. I have a long stick with a flag so people got know excuse. At the Dairy shows people will hold the doors open for me. I agree Kid just running around have no business on scooter or garden tractors. Suppose that is the reason we are so fat?

So people that cannot walk, even with support from a walker, should not be allowed to come and enjoy the shows? Doesn"t sound like the right answer to me. I say ban kids from driving anything at the shows and that should take care of the problem, while still allowing seniors to enjoy attending. My grandmother uses a walker exactly like the one in your photo, but could never use that to get around outside all day.

The problem described in this post is young kids driving lawnmowers or scooters, not our elders on golf carts or anything else.

Don't get bent out of shape... Folks are just too defensive these days....I get around OK and thought these walkers were meant to be able to double as a seat. There is no real answer that some crackerjack lawyer won't get ahold of and screw things up for everyone.

Thanks, Thurlowe, I had 2525 going around in my mind but I didn't know if it was correct.

On my comment about scooters running over toes, I don't mean to offend anyone using a scooter. I grew up helping my mother get around because she was crippled by polio when I was six months old. What I really meant to say was "watch where you're stepping" when you're in a crowd. Jim

Hugh , you have it right . There s way to many Butt Buggies in the pedestrian areas and there is nothing handicaped about 90% of them other than there good manners to there fellow man !! Ya cant tell me 4 45 yr. old guys piled on a golf cart crussing twice as fast as you can walk through the swap meet are doing anything other than getting in the way .

Common sense is needed... kids should not be driving anything at these shows. Perhaps valid drivers license only and insurance required?

I do not have a problem with a disabled or elderly person using wheels.

No I couldn't make it. Too much to do. Not looking good for today either- lawn to mow then ravens at 4.
I did get to the Westminster show last weekend though. It wasn't bad, but still small. More flea market than tractors, but I guess that's subject to the wet weather.

I agree, i was there too and its about the baddest place i go. Most of the kids were just driveing to be driveing, not actually going anywhere or doing anything other then driveing. made it hard to talk to anyone or even stand in one place. My legs are about to the point of needing a ride so i can't complain about guys that need them. I sat in a fellows display for a few minetes and the same mowers past me several times. i was the guy with the water jug slung from my shoulder.

Take picturs, and make notes, get any witnesses you can,, and hole the parents responsible, collect damages,,, and Maybe, just Maybe, parents will learn,,, and teach their kids ---

but I doubt it,,,

Thats the kind of thing that will ruin shows. I agree that some of the "bad kids" on garden tractors should not be allowed, but there are children at these shows that DO operate them right, mine included. he doesn"t speed, and is very careful of others and equipment. He could also run any of the big tractor we have, but for now he will run the jd 140.

at our Loins club parade we now require everyone to have valid drivers license to drive in parade.
local tractor show one extended familys children
used to rip around on nicely fixed up and painted tractors. didn't pay much attention to people walking or driving anything.
parents wouldn't say anything to the children so people sponsoring event got after the children.
the parents got mad and left as sponsors were "picking" on their brats. oh they haven't came back since.

I find that if I go to an antique tractor show, or hell even the Farm Progress Show, that there are too many golf cars or otherwise motorized vehicles around the premises. It's dangerous. I'd say the majority of them COULD walk, too. It's just angering.
