wheel drive tractors

When I think of a 4x4 tractor I think of a tractor that has front and rear tires of the same size and articulates or has a hinge in the middle for turning. MFWD stands for Mechanical Front Wheel Drive. Usually the MFWD tractor's front tires are smaller then the rear. The front axle drive can be turned off. The front axle does the turning similar to a 2 wheel drive tractor. The MWFD tractor costs more then the 2 wheel drive tractor, sometimes more then $20,000. Otherwise, 4x4 and MFWD are interchangeable. I may be wrong, just my two cents.
 
It's my understanding that besides 4 wheel being all the same size tire front and rear that the MFWD meant mechanical as opposed to some early front wheel assists which were hydraulic drive. they weren't as effective but a lot cheaper.
 
All well and good till you come to the Essex tridirectional MFRWD Mechanical front/rear wheel drive . Many early mechanics commited suicide working out the bugs on these .
 
I guess I forgot about those tractors. Thanks for adding the mechanical part. --Mechanical meaning some kind of drive shaft, etc. from the transmisision to the front axle.-- I always thought of hydraulic front drive tractors being FWA tractors. (Front Wheel Assist.) Oops, I think I opened a can of worms.
 
MFWD is front wheel assist. meaning the front tires are smaller than the back ones. 4WD means all four tires are the same size. An example of a 4WD is a JD 7520.
