starter direction

If you reverse the battery cables from positive ground to negative ground will the starter also reverse its rotation direction?.

With the typical starter, NO. Since the polarity of the power to BOTH the field coils and the armature is reversed rotation stays the same.

Permanent magnet starters (used on some OPE engines and a few newer vehicles) WILL reverse if the polarity of the power source is reversed, however.

I sure agree with Bob. Any farm tractor starters I've seen have wound electromagnetic fields versus permanent magnets, so absent any internal end to end to field coil wiring swaps or brush changes etc. theyre still gonna turn the same direction regardless of battery polarity.....To change rotation you need to reverse the electromagnetic field forces WITH RESPECT TO EACH OTHER (Field & Armature) and since a permanent magnet motor has a fixed North/South field and you essentially reverse ONLY the armature current (one of the two) if you swap battery polarity
it will then reverse its direction...

If you want to reverse the starter direction switch the wires on the armature brushes if they are long enough to do so. This will reverse the current thru the armature but not the fields thus reverse the direction of the starter rotation.

Other wise just switching the polarity of the battery connection will not switch the starter direction if it has wound field windings.

Basically saying is if you want to switch the rotation of a starter, current has to be reversed in only the armature or only the field poles.

Switching current in both field and armature will not reverse starter rotation.
