A few days I posted about a crack in the cast iron differential on my New Holland. These two gentlemen spent a lot of time discussing the problem with me over the phone and by e-mail.

Its nice to talk to people who truly know what they're talking about and don't mind talking to me in basic terms and helping a novice as myself.
Thanks Guys!!

Pretty sure I'm going to have it stitched. It looks like a pretty good candidate.
More expensive than the weld job, but a lot less than tearing it down and having it furnaced brazed.
I would always be nervous with the weld; I would always be checking it and babying the tractor.
I also removed the mounting plate and swinging draw bar.
If I need to use that, I'll use my old Ferguson.

You're seriously going to spend 3/4 the cost of that housing on a band-aid and you're scared to remount the drawbar housing?

If I was in the mood to be cheap I'd weld it, with NiRod. Otherwise I'd buy a new housing. I really don't see ANY value in this so called 'process' other than pissing money away.

Rod,

I would highly recomend that you do some
learning about the process before you condem
it. I think if you either tried it or watched
it being done you would have a different
opinion.

For Chuck to pay someone to split the tractor,
empty the housing and put it all in a new casting
would add a lot of cost to the price of the new
casting ,probably 2K labor for the hydrostatic
transmission.

Unless I'm seriously missing something I don't see why there should be anywhere near 2K in labor, even in a dealer shop.
If he's talking about a hydro, I can see that. An axle. No. Not by half.
If it's outside warranty, find someone local and it should be done cheaper yet. This is not a D9 we're talking about. Any of those compact's I've worked on can be substantially stripped in a few hours.

For me, 1200 for a casting or 900 to repair is a no-brainer where I do the work myself. I'm buying the new casting supposing I had absolute faith in the repair, which I quite honestly don't. Perhaps you have great experiences with it, but it's not something I could ever trust.
