1925 John Deere Spoker D, what a bummer.

One of our tractor collectors brought his 1925 JD
"D" to the show this week only to find out when he arrived that his left rear axle flange housing had busted and the pieces are lying somewhere along the highway.

He concluded that the housing had been cracked for some time as could be seen by the discoloration (rust) and by hauling it jarred it more and it broke.

It's such a nice looking tractor too!! It's enough to make a person sick!

I forgot to mention this in the first posting.

I have been told that steel wheels will fatigue a tractor much faster than rubber tires will. There is no give with the steel wheels expecially when hauling them at high speeds. Seems logical to me! This may be a perfect example!!

If the #$*@ thing could hold up to plowing and crossing the "dead furrow" while turning a simple drive down the highway wouldn't have broken it.

There's MORE to the story than is being told here!

That's all I know about it. Yes, if the chain inside the transmission jumped a tooth on the sprocket could put extra strain on this housing.

Actually the casting looks a little thin to me, but I'm not an engineer who designs these types of machines.

Tying it down with the chains hooked to the drawbar like many do instead of through the wheels will put much more stress on the axles too. IO'm nopt sure if it will effech one with steel wheels more than rubber tires but, lie mentioned before, there is no give to the steel.

Really sorry to read about this. Great looking tractor.

I am rather worried about the tractor being held up be a hydraulic jack and a plastic bucket. Should I be?

I don't think YOU have to worry greenbean. That would be quite a fall for a tractor in Missouri to land on someone in Kansas!
I think the bucket and the cribbing are holding up just the axleshaft. It DOES look like the tractor is supported by only a jack though... Not safe...
