zenith carbs

How easy is it to redo a zenith carb like on the small farmalls? If I buy a kit. or should I let the guys at the machine shop do it. Also is it hard to get them adjusted if I would do it myself???

I have done several. Just take your time and note the location of all of the parts as you dis-assemble. The kits from NAPA and maybe others lack a vent passage opening in the bowl gasket to allow the bowl to vent properly. This will cause flooding/leakage when the engine stops. It's easy to correct with a small gasket punch. Maybe the new kits are OK, it's been a few years since I did one. Took a while to find the problem.

First off, I've done a few and they're not bad at all. Pretty forgiving really.

Paul:

I've got a carb that does just this (leaks after you shut it off). The gasket is from a CIH kit though. It's fine if you turn off the gas, wait a bit and then turn the gas back on but will leak like crazy if you just shut the motor off and let it sit with out turning the gas off.

I just thought the needle was screwed up and was dealing with it. Since I don't have one in front of me at the moment, where do I need to make a hole?

Thanks,

K

The American Zenith is easy and parts are cheap. The British Zenith is an entirely different carb, and more complex. Parts are also very expensive. The British Zenith was used on several IH farm and industrial tractors in the 60s-70s that had BC-144 engines.

I got parts from the dealer once for a shebler carb on my wd45.

The gasket for the inlet orifice (needle and seat combo attached to the float) was made from something hard. Thought it was copper but it would not seal and leaked like you described till I replaced it with a rubber cellulose type gasket. Works great now.
