will a 6 volt system charge a 8 volt battery?

Have Oliver 77 with 6 volt system (new wiring). Will it charge 8 volt battery or am I better off just buying a 6 volt battery? Don't want to convert to 12 volts. Thanks

Well if you adjust the V.R yes it will charge an 8 volt battery but at best an 8 volt battery is a band aid fix for other problems so BUY a 6 volt battery and fix your problems. I sold an Oliver 77 that had a 6 volt battery in it and it would start 12 months out of the year and that was letting it sit for 2 plus months at times with out starting it

A compitent generator man can probably tweak your voltage regulator for 8v service. We have a JD B with a 6 volt generator, and a 12v regulator. Almost keeps 12v battery happy!

Hi , I've been running 8 v batteries in my 2 Ford tractors since 2000 . I was told by a battery shop & by the auto electric repair shop to put my charger on 6 v let it trickle chsrge for a few hours , then hit it with 12 v for a couple minutes to agitate the water more but no longer . I've had good service so far . But be sure you keep all connection points shiny & brite . Also use heavy battery & starter cables . Also I smear dielectric grease on all my connections to prevent corrosion . HTH ! God bless

Ooops , I forgot to tell you to take your generator, & VR to a repair shop & have them matched up ( VR needs to be tweaked ) . Then after installing them , be sure to polorize the VR before starting it . Your repair shop should be able to tell you how . HTH ! God bless

How about a large 6V battery and 00 copper cables with swagged ends. Then make the chassis return connection directly to a starter mounting stud. Set the voltage regulator with a voltmeter to 7.2V.

A 6 volt generator will explode a 12 volt battery.I worked on a 55 chevy that blew up 2 12v batteries.55 was the first 12 volt year for chevy.I put an ammeter in the line and found 60 amps at idle.Someone had put a 6v generator on and didnt take volt or current readings.Doubling the field voltage made the generator put out twice the current. What does the JD ammeter say?

It must because i replaced t[some tranny parts in a C that had 8v system said they just added the battery and didnt change anything else and it had been that way several yrs. I know of another C thats been running that way for a long time. I would just add the batt and go.

Is that what you did to your tractor. What tractor are you running an 8v system on and does it work or are you just telling a story someone told you.

I was sharing my experiences since 2000 with my Old Ford tractors with 8 v batteries . No regrets at all .I have much briter lites at night & faster startups . I wasn't having any problems with the oroginal 6 v so it isn't a band aid as guys think . I just wanted to try it out for myself .Plus , since 2000 , I've only had to replace 1 lite bulb . My first battery lasted 5 yrs , so I feel I got great service from it .HTH ! God bless

Most of the old 6v regulators were adjustable- were stock set to put out about 7.5 volts to charge 6volt batteries close to discharged, run at about 6.2-6.8 volts charged battery. IHC and VWs needing cold weather start would get a 8volt battery and the voltage regulator reset to peak about 8.5/9.2 volts and run about nominal 7.8/8.2 volts. Unset regulators that had been peaking at 7.5 volts usually maintained at about the 7.5 to 8.0 voltage- battery could 1/2 discharge over time but usually started vehicle. A 12volt trickle charger-2amp or so- once a month in winter could maintain full battery charge a long time. Old VW bus got the battery only one winter, 2 trickles over winter and VR reset the next spring to run fine (or as good as a 1200 engine could run) the next winter. Shop that readjusted regulator said they did a few tractors a year same way, were aware of procedure to help tractors start in Wisconsin winters. RN.

Ideal charging voltage for a 6V battery is 6.9 summer and 7.2 winter. An 8V battery's ideals are 9.2 summer and 9.5 winter.
Those 6.5V lights are going to shine bright but only for a short period of time with an 8V battery.
An 1/2 charged medium sized 8V battery with Walmart battery cables isn't going to shove any more current and voltage through the starter/ignition coil. Than a large 6V with high CCA and two 00 cables with properly made connections.
