Manifold heaters

I have a 64 ford diesel that has two heaters in the intake manifold. There was no wiring for them on the tractor when I got it. How were they wired and how were they actuated?
 
Some of them actually have a small fuel line running to them that burnt diesel fuel. There would be a button on the dash some where to activate it and the pump to pump fuel to it. It is used to heat up the metal manifold so it could heat up the incoming air to aide in starting.

This is all I can tell you about them, hope it helps.

Some ford diesels that were in bread trucks back in the 1980 & 90's had these preheaters.
 
If your tractor is a 4000 4 cylinder diesel then maybe I can answer your question. I have a 971-D with the factory glow plugs. They are about the same tractor if yours is the 4 cylinder model. On the left side of my hood is a push button just like the one on the right side. The right side button is for the starter. The left one is hooked to a relay that runs to the 2 glow plugs. When you push the button you hear a click and the glow plugs come to life. If you have a pretty good battery they work real well. I think the 2 plugs pull around 60 amps so that is why they use the relay.
 
I"ve never heard of two heaters but I think what you have is called a Thermostart. It has a fuel line that is fed from the return to tank line from the injector pump and a power source that is activated by the key switch. The power heats a grid that the fuel dribbles on to and creates a small flame to heat the incoming mixture to aid starting. You hold the key in the position between start and run for about 30 seconds to activate it and then try to start. It"s supposed to be good down to 5F.

I live in western Montana and it"s not much help to me below about 20F. I installed a block heater and have it connected to a timer. It turns on one hour before I have to feed and the engine starts up quickly down to -20F.
