experience burning #4,#6,bunker C in a modern diesel

We are looking at burning waste turbine lube oil etc at work in a turbo diesel gen set.
Currently the oil is "wasted" being burned through an auxiliary chamber on the solid waste incinerator.
We need a bigger/better standby source of power and we could even "co-generate".
Of course being a nuclear site we have to be "good two shoes" with tier III emissions etc.
Anybody here been involved with a similar setup?

I have heard of people running straight used ATF in their Diesel pickups.

I run 25%+ used but clean (that means clear) refridgerant oil in my 12 valve Dodge/Cummins all year round. Been doing this for three years. The other 75% is reclaimed heating oil. It also goes into my Diesel collector tractors.

Why not run your oil through a centrifuge (to be safe) and mix it with some percentage of Diesel fuel?

There are also stationary Diesel engines that run on a combination of Diesel and natural gas. And we haven't even touched on vegetable oils. Suffice it to say that most diesels can be run on a wide variety of fuels.

You should seek the advice of the mfg of your engine or fuel injection system. They probably of case histories of owners in your same situation.

I looked at the Cat site and while they do make diesels which burn heavy oil. A quick look didn't find any specs. Just a list of glowing compliments from happy Cat customers.

Hi B&D,

To get No4/No6 too the viscosity of No2 you would need to apply heat or thinn with another fuel.

Heat might be your best solution as you could start the engine on No2 then switch too No4/No6 after the fuel is warmed on a "exhaust" heat exchanger.

The trick is to find a brand new tier II or tier III common rail injected diesel that can handle 200F fuel inlet temps.
Plus handle oil that is contaminated chemically with stuff a 10 micron filter won't strain out.
Problem with a nuclear site application is all the rules and regs by well meaning but clueless people.
