Round up question

My question reguards "round up ready" seeds. I asume that it means the seed is for plants that are geneticaly (sp) grown to withstand roundup. Am I correct in my thinking on this.
I grew up on a farm in Kansas long before such things as round up. You don't need to know about round up to make telephone equipment work which is what I done for 40 years.

Yup you are correct. Round up ready seed "plants" are able to be sprayed with roundup and no ill effects on the beans or crop.

Non roundup plants would drop dead.

These crops were developed by isolating genes from round-up resistant weeds and inserting them into desirable crops.

Oh, is that the program where you pay them extra for seeds that will withstand the herbicide that you're going to buy from them? Yeah, I can see where that could be a racket.

I heard of 3 brothers farming together. The one directing the Roundup applicator forgot which field was NOT RR, burned out that entire field. OOPS, gotta keep that straight! Greg

I don"t know about farming RR corn or beans in the large scale, but I figure spraying Roundup once or twice during the growing season plus the extra cost of seed is still cheaper than conventional seed spraying different sprays that only control 3/4 of the weeds.

I don"t think that anybody is being gouged.

I've always wondered... (somewhat tongue-in-cheek, somewhat serious.)

When you plant RR corn one year, and RR beans the next, how do you kill volunteer RR corn that comes up in the beans?

;-)

Is the RR corn gene weakened enough that Roundup will take it out?

You add 6 ounces of Select to the Roundup when you spray the beans. It fries the volunteer RR corn in the beans.
