Many years ago I visited the steam show in Sycamore, IL. They had a device called a Flink Fan which measured horsepower. I unfortunately failed to ask how this device measured horsepower and it is bugging me. Can anyone tell me about it?

Probably just a style of fan dynometer. The hp required for a fan to turn a certain rpm at normal air temp and pressure is known and can be used to figure out the motor hp. Must be some other component to adjust blade angle or restrict the air flow to do the whole range of speeds.

A cousin of mine who's heavily into old tractors has a device consisting of a belt driven four bladed paddle on a wheeled chassis. The paddles are about 2'x3'. When belted to a tractor it's amazing the amount of power it takes to spin them, with higher speeds requiring more power.

My cousin says it was used mostly to check tuneup, lugging ability of the tractor, etc. Would this be what you're referrring to?

Ahhh! The Baker fan seen a few bring tactors to their knees the secret is to advance the trottle slowly and make sure the belt is tight sure does warm them up fast.

Goose, this is exactly what I saw. I have gotten replies that have me searching fan type dynamometers, they are fantastic!!

That name Baker fan has cropped up several times. I am guessing that the steam engine manufacturers each designed their own fan type dynamometer to allow comparison with other manufacturers, kinda like rigging a roulette wheel. I have seen today some test results with the manufacturer's engines out performing the competition.
