I have a windows anti virus program that pops up on my screen, and i can't get rid of it.I can't click out of it.It's trying to sell me a 75 dollar anti virus program and tells me my computer is infected. It's called windows antivirus pro.My avg antivirus says i'm fine.Is there anyway to clear this out,or is it a virusto.Thanks.

You are already infected. You need to download and run malwarebytes and see if it can remove the infection. It has some preliminary definitions in that initial download so you can run it w/o having to do an update first.

Just as a follow-up. Windows Antivirus 2008 and 2009 are malware that many antivirus programs cannot detect. I have been able to remove both flavors of it using malwarebytes. For more stubborn infections you can also download and run SuperAntiSpyware. I usually run malwarebytes first, then superantispyware to see if anything was missed.

Keep mind that some of these malware programs permanently screw up windows files and settings which may require registry hacks or file repairs, which may be well beyond the capability of a casual user. A really screwed up system may require a complete hard drive wipe and reinstall of your software to get the thing useable again.

Ray,
Had the same thing about 6 months ago and it eventually took over my computer where I couldn't do anything. Tried the anti software mentioned here and nothing worked. The only way to get rid of it is to re-format your hard drive and re-load everything. Of course you have backups of all your important files.

Ray,
When I have a problem in my Windows XP I use System Restore which is part of the Windows operating system to take my computer back to a time before the problem started. Don't know if this will resolve your problem but I'll be glad to walk you through the procedure over the phone.

Send me an email with your phone number and we can try it. My email is open.

please read this link. there are 5 programs listed that will fix your problem. i just had to clean my sons computer and these programs worked. i am now running these on my 3 other computers just to be safe.

one more thing. turn off system restore until you are clean. with system restore it will keep a snapshot of an infected computer...and you dont want that. REMEMBER to turn it back on when you're clean

Find out what it is called. Go on to "set program access and defaults" and see if it is listed on there(under the "change or remove programs tab. If so shut down the computer and start it in safe mode. Done by pressing F8 at start-up. Go into that same program (program access and defaults) ,click on it(the bad program) and delete it. Keep in mind that Windows Defender is not bad. It is actual Microsaft software. Windows Antivirus is bad.

oh yes. The antivirus that steal your credit card info but otherwise consumes not even 700k of disk space. That is an infection, but you can usually remove it easy enough by rebooting and pressing F8 to get to Safe Mode, then run msconfig and uncheck everything under the Startup tab. Restart again, update your AVG and do a full system scan. it will go away. Then, run msconfig again and turn everything back on.

works for me, and I've done it a lot. (I used to fix computers for people for fun and profit.)
