some years ago there was a big construction job in the area the company (from away) called me and others for mulch hay. They came guy got out and went to the barn (it was locked) said ffing barn is locked!! I said how many bales you want he said x-many. I told him what the price would be, he said we give you a card/paper and the office sends you a check. I said good have them send it as i get paid before it leaves!!! They got back in the truck called me a pig F^&ker and said i wasted there time and left. Several farmers did this and got a card/paper never did get a check and tried calling the number given and it was out of service. Any of you run into this any opinions?

I'd have to say you did the right thing.Did the piece of paper have a PO number on it?

I used to make hay to sell and sold a number of 18 wheeler loads and never was paid at the time it was loaded. I always got paid. Guess I was lucky. Only small buyers pay when they pick up a few bales.

i did some tractor work for the county fair- carnival. Of course they didnt pay up. The sherrif got ahead of the convoy and made them pay every gypped vendor.
all crooks should be violated.

Its rare that I ever get paid in full for a load before its delivered. I probably dont sell over 500 rolls a year that are even paid at delivery. Nearly all my customers either run with an invoice every 30 days or they contract ahead and pay so much a month. Knock on wood but I've never yet had an account that wasnt paid in full eventually. Sometimes I've carried the paper for a while (32 months was the record) but I got paid.

You did the right thing. Nothing beats the old "check is in the mail" line of BS.

coal & oil companies were famous for this scam in West Virginia. Used this trick for loggers & farmers. Got the goods then fought you tooth & nail for it for years, eventually taking out bankruptcy. Stuck a friend of mine for $23,000.

Can I ask why you didn't get paid before loading 18 wheelers? I do. If it's going a long distance, my policy is send a check 14 days prior to the truck. I'll cash the check, if it's good, I'll load the hay on the truck and off it goes. No problems!
Maybe I'm just not as nice a person as others, but I have no time or desire to get ripped off by some thief. Cash, then carry.

Hay man around here you would be bankrupt fast. I lose some buisness each year because i don' t do much for credit. But don't see where i lose anything major.

I sell 8-10 semi-loads of alfalfa per year, and I don't expect payment until after each load is weighed and delivered.

What upsets me is, my danged neighbor won't fix his pasture fence and his cows are ALWAYS getting out and pasturing on my alfalfa for free. :x
