O/T: Fire Bug in the Neighborhood...

Absent Minded Farmer

Don't know what's going on around here, but the bucket brigade just stopped a few doors down from here at the old school house. Been qite a few fires, lately. The wednesday before last was the start of things with a haybarn that caught fire. Thursday, an abandoned barn went up. Friday was uneventful. Sat., Sun. & Monday were more barn fires, with Mon.'s being the worst. Poor guy lost a barn full of restored tractors! I heard the FD once or twice, this past week & now they're just a stones throw away from me. All these fires happened within 20 mi. of here & I'm gettin kinda nervous. It would be my luck to finish the foundation on the shed, to find it burnt to the ground the next day! Might have to start sleeping up there with a garden hose & 10 ga. May put up a camera or two. Anyone know of a good night vision setup? - Mike

Costco has a real nice day/night vision security system set up. It is on sale now. Check it out at www.costco.com. LOL

Cabela's has very cameras for both day and night with flash or infrared stating at $99 I bought the $99 with flash to put on my Xmas tree stand last year worked great the flash scare off a couple late one night who were most likely up to no good.

We had a deal like that around here about 14 years ago. One fall some one stated burning down air cured tobacco barns in the middle of the night. Some were pretty good size, some older guys lost the whole crop of 2 to 4 acres. Local news stations didn't pay alot of mind to it. Then some transplant from town cried that they didn't feel safe live'n out in the county with all the crazy farmers drive'n the back roads all night looking to shoot any one around their barns. (No joke, neighbors started working in shifts just dive'n around from barn to barn, wasn't gonna kill any body just burn some a$$ with a shot gun) Well that got the ears of the tv stations, they did a story about the vigilantes and interviewed the county prosecutor. He looked right into the camera and said he would not charge some one for trying to protect their property and if people didn't like the idea of arsonist getting shot, they better make sure their teenagers that are doing this are home and stay home by dark. Was never another spark.

A bunch of high school-age fhucking arseholes did that in about 1980 around here.

Burned around 15 of them, a few a night. Numerous attempts at it later on in the 80's.

I tell you, anyone who does these things should have their balls cut off.

Few years back, neighboring volunteer FD had several set fires. Traced back to a couple brothers on the FD!

About 25 yrs ago that happened in my neighborhood. First a nice tool shed with tractor etc, then a barn with no electric. Come to find out it was the first shed owners grandson. I guess they said it was a s#xual kick for the kid. About a year later the firebug's great uncle went in his garage attic and found a little pile of ash where he had tried that one too but it went out.

Would not bother me one bit to feed him some lead. I would prop my feet up and use his dead arse at an otteman, and take anap while waiting for the sherrif to come on out and haul his carcass off. Time to quit babying these punks and enforce our rights. Tom

If these fires (arson) are all at night a night light on a pole or two will keep the boogers away. Works for burglars, too. Tell your power company give them your concerns and they"ll come install them right away. Bad guys don"t like night lights.

Ray is spot on!

We had a new "independant" fire dept that set up and would charge $150yr/home for "fire protection". No pay, they would let it burn as they drove by.

Every Thrusday we would have a new grass fire. A grass fire in the AZ desert is just pretty hard to start but the last one burnt 15000/a. Several fires were started inbetween homes(about 5a each home).

The pay for fire protection company was "encouraged" too leave the area and no more fires in three years.

The largest forest fire in AZ was started by a "local" fireman that only was paid when there was a fire!!! He"s doing time now.

www.stealthcam.net

those cameras take pictures and video, and you can't see any flash,,,

I use them all the time,,,and they work good for anything and anyone who wants to walk on my land,,,

A few years back the favorite high schooler "prank" was to burn down large bales of hay left in the fields. Were a number of fires throught the area, far too many to be from bad farming practices. They got 3 bales and about 4 acres of field burned before a neigbor called the FD, and they got it extinguished on my place. There was a car full of kids hanging out, until authorities arrived, then they vamoosed! You draw the conclusion!

We were taught in arson detection classes to not watch the fire--watch the people watching the fire! Some of those people do strange things and get strange looks on their faces, or they worship their hot rod, and get some "rocks" from the excitement of the fire! It is a good way to find out who is getting the most from a "set" fire!

I think I'll go with a stealth cam setup for the time being. There's already one big yard light that covers quite a bit of area. I'll use the cameras to cover the dark spots. May have one on the garage, too. Just had all my gas siphoned last month while on vacation. Two years ago, they siphoned off my H AND pulled the drain plug on the oil pan & chucked it! The cops were able to get plenty of finger prints & find the kids that did it. Seems they had broke into a neighbors garage & stole 5 full gas cans & all the beer in the fridge, the same night. I think I'll go over the insurance, too. Can't be too safe. As for my ol' 10, ready to rock-n-roll with a little rock salt. Only used if absolutely necessary. I'd rather whoever it be, to be thrown off guard by seeing the gun resting near by & wring his/their necks personally. Just my additional $.02 & a thanks for the info to all! - Mike

God almighty...and guys ask me why I lock up even my plowed ground....make everything as innaccessible to these derelicts as possible.

I agree with the idea of local kids. mark each fire on a map and draw lines connecting them. It will likley make a circle. put a dot in the center, thats where you start looking for the arsonist.
Also grandpa had a special "prowler load" for his shotgun. A half charge of powder pushing a mixture of rocksalt and hog hair. they may be able to pickout the rocksalt, but the pig hair stayed in and caused an infection. culprits eventualy showed up at the hospital/clinic. he always said "wait until they are running away and aim for the hind pockets". Non leathel, but effictive.Grandpa never had many prowlers.

Lost about 300 bales of hay a few year ago. Had 3 big stack of hay covered with tarps and all of a sudden one night all three caught on fire the same night. Got word that it could of been a young guy on the fire department that live a little over a mile away. Would of loved to give that guy a little rock salt.

Not putting anyone down on here, but this blaming kids is not fair for these major fires. In the last 20 or so years,90-95% of the arson fires(within 100 mi.) have been cover ups and were 30-40-50 yr.old people reponsible for them. There was a fellow arrested in Il.a few weeks ago that is credited with over 100 barn and business fires in 3 or 4 states that they know of.So it isn't always kids.
