cool weather's here to stay, how's your corn?

My corn here in central NY this year has been very lucky. It's in good shape. Planted by mid may and never slowed down nor looked back. There's stunted yellow corn all around me. I think it's because we missed the early floods. Just made up for it though- 6.5 " in Aug.

Mines just starting to dent. Going to need at least four weeks before a frost to have any chance to reach maturity. A frost any earlier and I think its going to be like 1992, 40-40 corn.

I chopped a load of early corn today. It was way too heavy still but its getting there. Feeding it as green chop. I'm thinking first of it will be ready in 14 days. The last of it went in the ground July 4, it may not come off until mid October. The early corn looks real good, over 10 feet tall, most stalks have 2 ears. We've had 17 inches of rain so far this growing season and the ground was saturated before planting. Plenty of manure and plenty of fertilizer.

We've got another week in the upper 70's, near 80 here yet. Our corn is looking better than some, worse than some. We have some in the same feild that varies from 4' to probably 8-10', all within a couple hundred feet.

Sweet corn is just ready to pick, and we planted that at the same time as our early corn in mid-late May. We got our late planted corn in 2nd week of June and it's looking pretty good considering the dry summer we've had. We got rain in August when the corn was starting to fill the kernels, so it got here just in time. It actually grew a few inches/foot as well, which we weren't expecting, but it sure was nice.

Could probably chop with the 1600 this fall, but hopefully we have the engine back in the 1855 in a few weeks. Dropped it off at the dealer on Monday.

On our south trip last two weeks, corn in NC was half dead, too late to cut for silage. MN- better not freeze before October.
