Made two people happy

There is a field I have been mowing for years that has seven large palm trees about 20-30 ft tall. The trees are in need of pruning, the fire dept says they are a fire hazard and need to be pruned off of the ground. The palm trees are rather expensive to prun, and to remove the cuttings.I found someone who will take the the trees to be replanted somewhere else. Lady who owns the property is happy and the tree guy is really happy, he can sell the trees. Question: Do palm trees grow in the eastern US? Stan

Their are many different kinds of palm trees. Those found on the eastern seaboard are actually palmettos, the state tree of South Carolina. They are generally not found north of Wilmington, North Carolina.

Further south there are also coconut palms and a number of other types. They may not be native but they can be grown.

We sure got those useless things here in South Texas. I recall growing up in So. Cal and they were everywhere, they were planted as windbreaks for the groves. Same was true here too, but as the groves vanish the palms stay. In the picture below, you can see a group of about 7 or 8 tall palms that are growing along the roadway in front of our place. They are much taller than the power lines, and the shorter of the trees catch fire now and then but it never hurts them. I would guess the tallest ones are about 40 foot tall. The fronds will drop and hit the powerline and ignite, usually burning the one frond and falling to the ground (the burn really fast).
The reason I don't like them, they drop seed pods this time of year and then start growing new palms everywhere you don't want them. They also drop the fronds in the wind, you don't dare leave a vehicle near a palm tree. And have you ever seen the shade a palm tree produces? None.
Other than that, the folks from up north are always intrigued by them since they won't survive up there.
