ATF type A suffex A

My 1085 Massey asks for a special MF oil in the power steering or, as an alternative, Type A suffex A automatic transmission fluid. My question, is the this a predicessor of dextron II and can dextron II be used?

Thanks,
Alf

Type A Suffix A was a predecessor of Dexron. I still have a can--round metal ends, paper sidewall--of Shell Type A in my garage.

dextron replaced type A. I'm not sure if I'd use the latest dextron IV ?? as GM and Toyota have gone to a thinner (less friction) fluid and I think the latest Dextron is that. Double check. I put Dextron III in my Case PS unit. Haven't had is running yet. Still working on post paint assembly.

This brings up a question I have had for some time. I have all ways used ATF in engines to clean injectors and such. It it Ok now, what with all the additives of anti-seize, or seize for the clutches. You know what I am talking about. If so. which ones?

We just use the same perma-tran that we run in the transmission on our 285 and 165. Keeps things simple, until the shop replaces the PS pump and fills it with ATF evn though a yellow/gold colored fluid is running out of the lines.

Still looks like mud and I've changed what I could a few times. Just had a line blow on the steering, so that probably flushed out a good bit of it...

Hi Donovan,

I think that system must hold quite a percentage of it's oil not in the reservoir on the pump. My pump front seal blew off against the back of the drive gear so atf was getting in the engine and black engine oil was getting in the steering. I have had the pump off several times since I fixed the front seal and use clean red oil and it still turns black as soon as it is circulated.

I think there's a lot in the system between the steering motor, pump reservoir, and the cylinders underneath, as well as all the lines that connect everything.

It's getting a little clearer, but I'll probably change it out a few times yet this year.
