Oil in rearend/tranny

I pulled the plug on the rear end & tranny expecting to find a milky oil since I suspect a bearing problem from a loud whine in the tranny. The oil that came out was very clear, clean and quite light. I suspect the previous owner just dumped in some light grade hydraulic oil ( or even 10w-30 motor oil) just before I picked it up a few months ago. The manual clearly recommends 80-90 oil, so I'm wondering whether the light oil could be the cause of a whinning noise? The noise was intermittent, not constant.
Any ideas?

Put the correct oil in it and forget.. If you heard my Fordson you would have nightmares.

If you are working on a Ford or NH that is 135 Hyd oil is normal. Very thin or light HYD oil.
