Need help with John Deere 455

I have a John Deere 455 lawn tractor which has fuel shutoff problems. When you first turn the switch on the valve will open then it will close. There are 3 wires to this valve. Red, white and black. The red and black are getting 12 volts with the switch on. The white and black are not getting voltage. I checked another mower just like this and both sets of wires have 12 volts. It appears this valve opens with one set of wires and is held open by the other set. I can run a jumper from the red to the white and this will hold the valve open. Any ideas on where the white wire should be getting voltage from. Thanks for any help you might provide.

White wire gets voltage from stating motor side of the solenoid. When cranking voltage pulls fuel solenoid in and red wire holds it in. Check to see that the fuel solenoid is going in far enough. I have had the solenoid over time to turn enough to limit the travel to where it will not pull in far enough to stay. unhook linkage from pump and see if it will stay in. If this is not the problem, get a new solenoid.

Thanks Dave. I will unhook the solenoid tomorrow and see what happens. Black wire is not hot. I had figured it was the ground. The darn thing just all of a sudden stopped running. I thought it was the fuel filter but that did not solve the problem. when you turn the key on the solenoid will pull in and then pop back out.
