I need to buy a GPS for my car, and would like to have some recommendations from this board.
I appreciate the input from you folks. I'm sure lots of you have a GPS you could recommend, also brands that you have possibly had and did not like. Thank you for your time...............

Have a Garmin 265, love it, even in nowhere WV it still finds one lane road locations as long as they have 911 adress for over 1 year, traveled with it out of state 4 times this summer, makes finding locations easy, put in address and go, I like the spoken directions since it keeps me from looking at it when ready to make turns, HTH Mark

I've got a MIO 500. Works great as long as you have a street address. Has some trouble with finding destinations by name. Girlfriend's Garmin seems to do better. $.02. Jeff

Garmin, features of your choice. I have the 200, now the 205 I think. Wife calls it "chatty Kathy". But sure helps a poor country boy in the city. lol

I'm happy with my TOM TOM. My only complaint is that if I want to take a particular route, such as Chinook Pass instead of Snoqualmie pass to get over the Cascades, it takes some work to convince it. It would be nice if I could get an alternate route by specifying a highway number.

I test drove the TOM TOM, but decided to buy three Garmins. I'm more than satisfied, and I never disliked the TOM TOM, just thought the Garmin was better.

Probably (GPS) the only thing I give our government credit for.

I have a Garmin 205, and I think it's great. But--it's also the only one I've ever owned.

GARMIN IS THE ONLYYYYYYYYYY ONE I WILL HAVE. A while back I was updating and had to call tech Support,,,,,got right throuh to AN AMERICAN in Kansas who spoke ENGLISH instead of some Habib in Pakistan who dont speak english,,,,,,,,,they were kind courteous and polite,,,,,,,,the unit always works great,,,,,,,,why change...

I have the Magellan it works in both English and Spanish. Don't work in Independence. OR
One thing to remember they all use MapQuest for there maps. It has lots of little thing that help make life easy like blue tooth for your cell phone and voice control. Four different ways to find your way. Get lost and it will find your way back. But what I like best is just say "Magellan" "Go Home"

We went with some people who used Tom-Tom, appeared accurate got the turns within feet and got you turned around if you missed. Would listen to recommendations of others.
Since we were with somebody else, some considerations might be a headset for the driver, if you're on a long strait away, turn it off.
These people had the T-T on, then turned the radar detector on, even though they never sped, and then they turned the radio on.

got a texaco map that works perfect...

just give it to the wife and then she tells me where to go.. wife, model 1.0 is still working fine and doesnt hesitate to tell me where to go. She can even do reroutes, talk faster, slower, louder and really loud. I dont know how many foreign languages she can speak but she so far has been 100% reliable. She is also good for a hug now and then too.

Garmin 750 (now another number) way better than my brothers magellin. will not TOTALY replace a map and is shortsighted about detours. But to use a map you need to know your location and orintation.(Drop you into a strange place at night with no compass and you are lost until you find a road name/number) GPS always knows this.

I have a garmin etrex legend. It is a small hand held unit. Not at all ideal for use navigating a car. But it will do very accurate acreage calculations.

Not work buying to calculate acreage though. Click below. There are a couple sites that do a nice job of that.

Wife has a TomTom, or DumbDumb as we call it.Its works OK, but can be confusing at times in city traffic, and more than once told us to turn the wrong way, only to say "Take the nearest exit and turn around."

Garmin owns the market.

Any of the Nuvi series 250 and up will have turn-by-turn nav. Very useful. I got my wife the Nuvi 255W for Christmas last year and she's been very happy with it. They go for around 200 bucks.

I have been marrie and divorced twice. GPS does not cheat, lie, or clean out savings, max out credit cards----

You can stare at a GPS without getting arrested or slapped up side the head. They also do not CARE how many other GPS's you have and touch.

Wives are hole bunch pretty compared to GPS. GPS can't get beer even if they know the directions.

GPS can run you in circles --ah maybe wife, same thing?

Wife was good to hug ---acording to many many men in town.

big fred;

I do not know anything about the Tom Tom because I have a Garmin but try this and see if it works with yours.

Put your destination in and let it calculate a route. Look at the route and see if it takes you threw the pass you would like to go. If not put in another stop. Since I would not know a address of the pass I would go to browse map; it will bring up a map and I can select the hwy right where it goes threw the pass. Once I select it the machine will ask me if I want to continue to my final destnation by way of this hwy threw the pass. Once I select yes it will figure a route from me to the pass I selected and then from the pass to my destination.

Like I said this is how my Garmin 330 works.

I have a field that is shaped like a horseshoe with 3 offsets, will need to use a GPS to get acreage, thanks for the replies.

Went to that site out of curiosity, dont depend on it for roads, it shows a road through my alfalfa field. A few years ago there was a field road between my fields and a plane or satalite took a picture, since then lots of these topo maps show it. County and state forestry, sherrif etc have backed me up on occasion when hunters have demanded access across my field. I plowed up that field road and go around my fields, bit of a hassle but new satalites do not show a crossing.

This is meant in a nice way Cman, but if you can't read and use a Road Map.then A GPS is only going to make matters worse.I have been looking for the last 4-5 yrs.for one and EVERY ONE that has been Demo"t from a set loc.to a set loc.have all had different routes and can be up to 100 mi.diff.on travel and none of them have the shortest or best roads listed.Lastly a family member that travels a lot in their job has found on the return from a town loc.to home that it is just as likely to send you East instead of West or in circles at best.Just my opinion and worth what time it took to read it.

we have tried several and they are only good in town if the road has not been renamed----need to be replaced about every 2 years or upgraded as the store says so we use rand mcnally from dollar store and seems to work well ---we get semis from all over and some of them have missed us by 50 miles costing the companies thousands---so we tell the drivers to throw the gps in the river as they cross it
