The grand champion ham at the KY State Fair was auctioned for $1.3 MILLION, or around $5,000 an ounce.

And you though speculators had oil and gold prices up...

Even more interesting, one of the purchasers of the ham is Jewish, and won't be eating any of it.
High Priced Pork

This doesn't look like a real auction of the ham, but just a high-profile way to donate to charity (which both parties probably were going to do, anyhow)- no indication whether the actual seller of the ham got anything.

Reminds me a little of a story I heard many years ago- son of a well-liked farmer was hurt or had expensive disease, and the family sent his pony to the local auction to sell to raise money. About everybody in the place took turns "buying" the pony, then telling the auctioneer to run him through again. After everybody "bought" the pony who was going to, the final "winner" told the auctioneer to send the pony back home to the kid.

It is absolutely for charity, happens every year. Breakfast is put on by the farm bureau and the "ham" is just a way to advertise the Ky pork producers.

One of the bidders is an heir to the Brown-Foreman liquor fortune and the other bidder is the guy that founded Republic bank, he is Jewish and the ham will not be entering his house.

They were bidding against each other and the Lt. Gov. asked them if they would be willing to each pay the high bid amount and they agreed, all for charity, $650,000 each, 1.3 million total.

at least that is my understanding of it

Paul Harvey once told a story about in Texas a teenage girl had a 4H hog to show at the local county fair. Not too long before the fair, she was injured in a car accident and had substantial medical bills. One of her siblings showed the hog, and the gal was beside the ring in a wheelchair during the auction. By the time it was over, they'd sold her hog 34 times.

The way Harvey told it, there was hardly a dry eye visible.

BUZZ Man thats some hi dollar pork! , Go figure ,.. funny. ,We never got that much for all the 350 hogs put together , that i used to feed out each Year up at dads place ,... However , about 20 yrs ago I donated serveral 40 lbs. piggs for a good cause ,.. A fine young man down Laconia way had terminal Cancer . Such a sad thing ... neighbors and church group put together a supper and feeder pig auction ,, Back THEN , WE all HAD PIGGS ,, All OF those Pigs Sold serveral times before a willing farmer Could provide a home and became the successful bidder after serveral junp bidders paid there price and hollered "SELL IT AGAIN" !!
