Always wandered this, never figured it out my self or asked any one so I figure this is as good a place as any. I got home late from work and had to spray tobacco before checking cows this morning so it was hotter than most days when I see them. Why is it in the summer cows can have 10 acres of grass and two acres of shade but they all pile up in one 40' circle in the shade? They were bunched up so tight I could hardly count them all, didn't even try to count calves. I could see this if there was only one wet muddy spot but they were all just piled up under one tree, some standing right on top of some lay'n down. Rest were hudled up so tight you could not have slid paper between them. Looks like it would be cooler on them to have some air between them.

Sorry for the ramble, been a real long night.

Some of our steers were all under a small fir tree in a big circle all the way around it. all with their heads in under the limbs and their buts out in the sun.
Who ever said cows were smart never saw one.

I read one time that domestic cattle bunch because they still have the instinct to protect themselves and the herd from predators.

The nine replacement heifers I have here behind the house have fence row with tall trees around it on the west side of their lot. Every afternoon they lay under the trees and when the sun starts going down they line up shoulder to shoulder and eat right at the edge of the shade. As shade starts getting bigger faster they walk faster. I thought that was pretty smart for a bunch of little girls.

I have observed this in my cattle for years. Even late yesterday evening they were all huddled up out in the middle of the pasture. I always contributed it to their means of fighting the flies and horse flies. Whenever they switch their tails to swat the flies, the majority of those flies will land on a different animal. Pretty smart actually when you think about it.

I'll go along with [b:654c4848f0]mjbrown[/b:654c4848f0] on the flies.

Lot's of tails employed for swatting flies.

If a stock tank is available, they will wade out up to their necks to get away from the flying pests.

Also probably feels good, especially around here in the Texas heat.

Probably flies, like others have said. What I have never figured out is how the cows can find a hole in the fence to get out, but never want to go back in through the same hole. Stan

How come Presbyterians can have 40 pews to choose from in a church and they all congagate in the 4 back rows?

If you find the answer to that one, tell me why horses with a feeder full of hay will go out in a blizzard and stand next to the road pawing through the snow until passerbys call the sheriff and tell them you have starving animals.

Man THATS THE PERFECT time to squirt as many as you can with ICVOMEC wormer.. thats what I did Today ,. Cause my cows like Shade . Mine Like to hang out in the barn and eat , thats perfect for replacement heafers ,, but you will need to clan the Shuff out of the barn frequently . I feel sorry for these poor cows that have a tent for shade , But I recken' anything is better than nuthin '

kyplowboy, Cattle like shade too, they just only have Squaters Right to the ground they occupify. They can't control who their neighbor is at time.
Watched a bunch of cattle yesterday here in Central Texas 103,104,105 degree weather depending on what little town you were at, This bunch was standing shoulder deep in a stock pond not just 1 or 2 but about 20 head! Cattle like shade and to be cool too! Sounds like people! LOL!

Coulda been in the pond just 'cause it was hot, but...........cattle which graze endophyte infected fescue will often have an elevated body temperature causing them to stand in water in an attempt to stay cool.
