While driving down the road it looks like water on the road...what is that? Looks a like the vaporation of water of such. thanks stupid question but what the heck....

In my early days it was the fog of the booze but really it is just the heat radiating off of the pavement that gives that illusion.

Buddy of mine in Pickering Nuclear Security died that way. The mirage hid a train sitting on the road crossing in the distance.
Jim M pulled out to pass the semi he was following as it slowed. The semi was slowing/stopping for the train but Jim M didn't see the train previously in the distance. Due to mirage and later due to being behind the semi.
Jim M had continued at speed and accelerated out from behind the semi. And didn't get stopped in time before hitting the train.

With all due respects to your buddy, passing a semi (or any other vehicle) thru a RR crossing is not only stupid (or fatal in his case) but is against the law in most states.

True. From what I read of the report Jim was in behind the semi and missed seeing the signs. He should have known however that the RR track was there. Everybody crosses it twice a day to & from work.
Probably what lulled everybody's attention was the fact a train only used that crossing 4-5 times per year.
