Hear it's illegal............. Also hear about people spilling some and it taking forever to come clean......... Some tend to spill what they had some diesel fuel in.

Not being a scientist, I'm unsure of the actual proven scientific long term effects, Ive done it for years (hay wagon, posts etc) and it sure preserves the wood. I kinda figure that crude oil came from mother earth "and to earth it shall return" n she can handle it both times lol. Probaly illegal nowadays in most places n the dudes in white haz mat suits n SWAT teams will show up n haul ya off to jail

Yall take care now

Your fence boards and posts will last a whole lot longer with the used motor oil on them than if you used nothing at all, and the used motor oil is probably just as good if not better than any commercial product you could buy. Like John T said, "it came from the earth and to the earth it shall return".

Used engine oil is carcinogenic and can contain besides "oil"; lead, tin, benzene, acid, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (can cause skin cancer), even MTBE (Methyl tert-butyl ether). Get these items in the ground water and your water is no longer safe.

There are better and safer items to preserve wood instead of used engine oil.

Well for one thing doing that is an EPA no no and if you get caught doing it who knows. That said yep it does help but just painting it on is not all that good you almost need to soak the boards in that stuff a couple weeks

Just being alive can cause skin cancer. I dump used oil on machine parts I don't want to rust, & posts that I don't want to rot. Just don't let the greenies catch you.

Long term effects....... I cant really say but I dont know very many barns or fences around here that werent painted for years (since the 1960's at least) with a mix of used engine oil and lamp black. The legalities I cant speak to, but those that have been painted regularly that way havent needed siding replaced.

The EPA has filled me so full of BS that I park my car in front of my neighbors house and walk home. They have to come up with something to justify there existence.

I use it on my fence posts when I see the white ants, they don't like it, works well but think enviroment crowd not enthused, but then I don't see them coming here to replace the posts either.
