preventing mold in hay ???

I had hay that I put upstart to mold. It was dry when I baled it and when it was put in the barn. I use old tobacco barns to store it. I put down pallets so the hay would be off the ground. The hay molded just on the bottom and not up inside the bale. The only ones that did this were the bottom ones. Should I add another layer of pallets to help with air movement? Any thoughts??

I have to store hay in a dirt floor barn. So I just put mulch bales on the floor, and then stack good hay on top of them. Never had any mold problems again, and I havent moved the bottom layer in 9 years. hth j

Amen, I was always taught to stack on end cut side up,(dont always do it cut side up) My father in law on the other hand, is the only guy I have ever met who stacks the bales on there flat side.....

The ground releases moisture. If you don"t stop it with vapour barrier or have enough ventilation to take it away, the bottom layer of hay gets wet and moulds.

Plastic or sacrificial hay.
