what next?!

My work schedule put me behind the eight ball this summer for hay, so when my days off happened, there was rain to thwart my hay plans. Then our wee one was born, and two weeks later back to work... now finally a couple of days of sun, and I see one of the rear tires is half flat with calcium leaking out for the last however many weeks. Hay will get put off again - hopefully the tire shop can get it fixed before Saturday closing. Anyone else having trouble with their schedules combined with the weather?

Heh heh. Just waiting for the severe thunderstorms and tornadoes to get here. Been under a warning now for about an hour with the storms coming east out of Toronto.

Just all summer long... Weather, and job commitments have really made a mess of my hay, oat harvest. Worst hay I"ve put up in years, and having trouble with baler. Oat harvest looked absolutely beautiful, until I got weather problems. We bind and shock our oats like the Amish, and then take them to a local steam show for thrashing. Now have 6 wagon loads in barns, or under tarps waiting for next weekend... Unfortunately rain messed up quite a bit of the crop, wet straw, moldy and sprouting oats. Will be a tough job for thrashmaster! Thanks to a couple friends from the steam show, we got them under cover at all!

I had hay left from last year so I sold this year's standing to a local dairy operation. They were in and out in a few hours.

It's been working out ok for me so far this year. Next week our shop was looking for 2 guys to take a voluntary lay-off for just a week, so I'm leaning pretty heavy towards taking it.

We were gonna cut our hay this week, but between finding a bad bearing on the haybine and rain in the forecast, we're letting it go a little while longer. Might be able to get it cut tomorrow and Saturday to bale on Mon-Tues.

I'm also looking at pulling the engine out of our 1855 and dropping it off at the dealer to have it fixed.

Always. Haven't been able to get a good fertilizing on the hay field this year. When we had the time to put it out, no rain in the forecast.

Tried some liquid fertilizer, it didn't do anything at all, was a waste of money, time & gas.

Yep, I gave up on hay this year. I have a pair of 605C's and a twice wore out kuhn 66 mower. I only cut about 5 acres at time because with my work schedule if both baler goes down it will be 3 to 4 days before i get going again. I got the tobacco ground turned about mid April and could not work any more ground till the first of June. With a job where I work 12 hour nights, 3 days one week 4 the next, 60 acres of corn and beans, 3 acres of tobacco, 40 momma cows to see after, and 30 acres of hay I just didn't see it all happen'n. I found a guy who would cut and bale it for $17.50 a bale. Even if every thing went good, I couldn't pay myself to do it for that. I raked it for him and it was the best money I have ever spent. I always buy some hay any way, as much rain as we have had there is alot of hay on the market and much of it cheap that got a little rain on it. I can buy up what else I need, am graze'n off what would could have been a second cutting but if I had done it myself I would just now be getting done with the first and not getting ready to cut tobacco like I am now. Unless it turns out to be the dryest and hottest Sept. ever after the 2" I have got the last few days, I am going to have grass till way up in the fall. Good luck with it. I know how you feel about the weather, seems like every time it has rained this summer has been while I was home and it's always nice while I am at work. The guy who works here the nights I don't farms on the side too, I have been telling him I hope he has enjoyed this summer, he'll get the rain on his days off next year.

I left Toronto last night around 5:30. There was lightining in the sky as I was leaving and getting pretty dark. I stopped at bowmanville for supper. Turned on the radio to the Peterbourgh station and they said they were starting to get hit. As I was going north on 37 towards tweed the sky was pretty bright with the flashes. Got home at Carleton Place around 10:30 and it started to rain around midnight.

You passed me by about 3 miles just south of Tweed. Charity riding stable west of here had their arena damaged pretty badly and a few other buildings damaged.
