Took my 03 dodge diesel to dodge dealer for free
oil change. while it was on the rack, they called
me in and told me the waterpump was leaking. I
could not see pump from underneath. They also told me thermostat gasket was leaking. they could do work right now and estimate was $590. Told them due to money problems I would have to wait a while. Got home and called Napa and new waterpump
was $48. When I raised the hood and looked, the pump was over to one side held on with only 2 bolts. Didn't even have to remove fan. I changed everything in about 1.5 hours. cost approx. $125.
I called dodge parts dept. and was told new pump was $318.

Smart man. Swapping a water pump on a B Cummins has to be about the easiest job known to man.

You got that right about the belt. I decided I needed a new one, but got home with it and the old one looked heavier and better, so put old one back on. Even tho diagram is on shroud have air cond. Took longer to put belt over, under behind and around everthing than it did to change pump and thermostat.

I"m not sold on the Napa water pumps, My Versatile tractor has a new motor because previous owner put a Napa water pump on it and the impeller spun on the shaft and overheated the motor. This was on a 855 Cummins. Just a thought, the pumps for the pickups might be new, this one was a rebuilt.

We had a water pump go bad in a '98 Dodge Cummins out in the middle of nowhere, so we threw in a spare water pump for a 2388 CIH combine and drove away about an hour later. The impeller for the combine pump had a band fastened to the outside of the impeller fins, maybe for greater flow, but it's been working for five years without any trouble. Yes, figuring out the serpentine belt did take some time. Jim

Probably a mechanic working flat rate looking for a gravy job to pad his numbers. One of the biggest reasons I quit the local dealer years ago was because of the dirty dealing done by the service writers and unscrupulous mechanics. The flat rate manual probably said that was a 3 hr job, and he could do it in a half hour. Thats why he had the time to do it right away, thought he had you on the hook, I'm surprised he didn't tell you that you wouldn't make it home without it blowing the engine.

Belts! I put a Jake on my '03 which takes a slightly longer belt to reach out and drive the vacuum pump for it. And only just barely a smidge slightly longer. Two fellas stretchin' the two of them out together couldn't tel the difference. Kept the original tucked under the back seat and a good thing. Clutch on the vacuum pump bit the dust and got noisy while on a road trip, so I was ale toswap the riginal back in and skip the vacuum pump, rather than have it bind up and shred the belt.

Trick is, nobody's been able to cross the number on that longer belt to have a spare back. Gotta pay Mopar (!!!!) or Cummins (not so bad but not at all attactive) price for it. Ouch!
