Can you use residential door in a steel building?

Thinking of a 8x8 or 16x8 to make it easier to run a pickup in and out of one side without having to mess with the big door (and moving things)

The insulated residential doors sure are cheap compared to the specific ones for metal buildings. Has to be a reason no one does it?

It's done all the time around here.

Just gotta wrap the poles with steelon each side and top of door.

An overhead door is an overhead door.

You can use any door you want. I have a 8x8 door in my barn and it is not easy getting a pickup in with the mirrors, just squeeks in. Most bigger trucks would not fit in. I would not go less then 10 feet wide.

Agreed.

My dad built a garage back in 1973 on the home place with two 8X8 doors - good enough for what he used it for. But my brother owns the place now and can barely squeeze his Super Duty through the opening - when he does his wife refuses to try and back it out for fear of damaging the truck. Its close enough that snow on the ground is enough to make the truck to tall to fit. Width wise it fit easy enough - but he has power mirrors and pulls them in.

What they said about the 8' wide door. You also don't want a 16 foot wude door for 2 vehicles. Still have to park them so close together that you can't hardly get out of the driver's door on the right side vehicle. Owning an expedition and f150 pu(all 4wd), we've had to cut the end of the antennas off and raise the door and door opener to allow it to open to full height to clear a 7' tall residential garage door. And don't put the edge of the door any closer than 2 feet from a wall(3 feet is better). When you pull into the building and your mirror has just cleared the door, you still need 2 or 3 feet of space to open the door unless you are the thin man. Good luck. And as you said in your post, you wanted to make it "easier" to pull your pickup in so don't scrimp on the width. And make sure you have at least 24 plus feet to pull the pickup in.
