Diesel fuel water

Read the post about additives for water in diesel fuel. Do these additives remove water that is in the fuel line headed for the engine, water that has settled in the tank, or both?

It cost me $421 to have the dual tanks cleaned on my 97 Ford. Mechanic said each tank had more than 2 gal of water in them and were so gunked up he had to send them to a radiator shop and have them steam cleaned.

I would like to prevent that from happening again.

it may be prudent to put a water separator in the line.expensive water from the servo if they don't purge their tanks. They say Metholated spirits works in petrol vehicles but I haven't had the problem in diesel.

Our little JD4600 has a drain at the lowest point on the funnel shaped plastic fuel tank. (12 gal) This is the greatest idea, once in a while I drain out a quart and use it for starting a bonfire! If the water is emulsified in the fuel then you need an additive, I think I will get some just to be on the safe side.

How long has this truck been setting. The black gunk is algae it will plug up filters and pumps and injectors if it get that far. Hopefully the filters kept it out. Drain the bottom of the filter to see if it has water in it.
Next buy your fuel from a good dealer who sells a lot of fuel this will keep your tank clean and don't let it sit around for months with the same fuel in it.

Since the truck is 12 yrs old, the water probably accumulated over time. Truck is driven daily.

My mechanic showed me how to dump the filter, but I haven't tried it yet.

Place where we buy diesel is at least .10/gal cheaper than everyone else so they sell lots and lots of diesel.

Any diesel engine should have a water separator before the final filter. If you use an additive,be certain it does not contain alcohol which will suspend the water thru the separator then cause damage.Alcohol works fine with carburated gasoline and propane engines.
