round baler fires

had two locally burn up just in the last 2 weeks locally, both newer new holland. Is this a common problem, both come from farms that are high priority with maintenance.

An infrared non contact thermometer is very handy for checking bearing in a baler perodically.

Had a Vermeer catch on fire a few years ago.......bearing failure; just dumped the bale (it wasn't on fire) and pulled the burning (loose) hay out. No damage.........

I don't think I would operate a bailer or a combine again with out a remote reading thermometer. Harbor freight has one cheap that seems to work good for me. After I pull a trailer a few miles I test each wheel bearing with it. All most a must have for a combine to catch hot bearing before they burn.
While we are at it; never park a combine in a stubble field over night..all ways on bare ground.

#1 Odd how the driver rarely knows enough to park with the tractor facing into the wind.
#2 Stranger yet how somebody can afford a $75,000 tractor, a $50,000 baler and they can't come up with the coin for a couple of 2-1/2 gallon pressurized Class A fire extinguishers. With some AFFF added to the water.

I know of two of the newer New Holland belt balers that have burned up they must have aproblem. Thats one worry I don't have with the NH chain balers not much to burn plus it doesn't have all the sheet metal to hide what is happening in the baler

Two John Deere"s here in Kansas this last week. One was a Brand new one, hadn"t run 30 bales through it. I think the problem is foriegn made bearings, they don"t all have grease in them. The second problem is the operator doesn"t get out of the cab and look over the equipment ever once in a while.

About three years ago our Fire Dept was toned out to a baler fire. It had baled about thirty bales after coming from the Case/IH dealer shop with a total rebuild. It was a total loss. I think one of the new SEALED bearings did not have any grease in it from the fartory.
