Just thinkin'

While driving my tractor the other day I was doing a little thinking. When this country was set up a couple hundred years ago it was done so by farmers and common folks. That seemed to work well for a very long time. Now most politicians are lawyers and career politicians instead of commoners. Seems like the past several decades are really screwed up. Am I missing something?

You've got that right. The problem is this country was founded by "We the people" and is supposed to be controlled by "We the people" through our elected representatives. The problem is the people getting elected nowdays are so far removed from the realities of daily life that "We the people" live with that for the most part their as worthless as teets on a bull.

"All tyranny needs to gain a foothold is for people of good conscience to remain silent".

Thomas Jefferson (one of those people that set up this country )

thurlo, yes some were lawyers, but not a large percentage. I also believe that back then lawyers had more morals and were more in touch with reality.

But the electoral college proves the founders didn't trust the common folk and leave the true vote up to a small group of people who certainly aren't farmers!

Yes quite a few lawyer but now the list of cogressmen would read politician/lawyer. The signer had lives out side of the government that is why they only prescribed one day of the year that they must meet.

Maybe you'd like to explain the comment 'the electoral college proves the founders didn't trust the common folk '. That is NOT my understanding of the electorial college.

The electorial colledge was put in effect because uf the difficulties involved with travel at the time. Remember back then what to us nowdays is only a few hour ride in a motor vehicle would have taken days on horse back or on foot through undeveloped wilderness. Basically it was alot easier for a small, designated group to travel the distances involved and gather to make the decisions based on the thoughts of the people than to expect everyone to be able to travel those distances and do it. Too, like someone else stated, at the time there weren"t alot of "politicians" like we think of today. Most did have their own life outside of the capitol where they lived, farmed, ranced, or whatever for a living and did the politics because they wanted to, not because they were getting paid/bribed/etc to. In other words they lived out in the real world with us "common folk" so they knew what The People wanted and were inclined to follow those thoughts as much as possible. I'm sure that there was still graft and corruption back them but I'd bet it wasn't nearly as bad as it seems to be nowdays.

well a tyrant has landed and he has a foothold from millions/billions of dirty dollars he has been afforded by enemies of this country and this system of freedom that our founders graciously and MOST ingeniously devised....now the ingrate welfare addicts want this to continue and i really do not see a way of stopping them. Thomas Jefferson had other great quotes....some of them should surface sooner than later

Actually the electoral college was founded on the idea that the common man wasn't smart enough to weight the issues.
